I sure hope new coach...can at least get 2 JUCO DL/DE's recruits and a couple of JUCO LB's that can come in this spring and provide some stability for our 2008 defense. There has got to be another Adrian Haywood out there somewhere. Man, that guy was a great player for us.
While we always need lineman (and we do have at least 6 redshirt OL that can play next year if they maintain their grades) we REALLY need LINEBACKERS and DEFENSIVE ENDS. We are WOEFULLY thin at these position as is evident by the small size of player that we are having to play at both positions. Smart and Yenga should be playing linebacker given their size and lack of bulk to play DE. However, we don't have enough players at DE so we are having to play both linebackers at DE. Since they are playing DE we are forced to play Will Bonilla and Wilton McCray at linebacker instead of at safety, which their size would normally dictate. Bonilla, for instance, is listed at only 5'11" and weighs only 205 lb. McCray is only 6'0" and 205". Potential replacements for him next year are the same size. Given the problems on defense this past year and the poor tackling exhibited at the point of attack, the new coach would be well served in concentrating on upgrading both the defensive end and linebacker positions first and foremost!
My Juco Christmas list has LBs and OTs. Maybe someone can slide over from Guard, but who? and MAYBE if we bring in someone at DE, our LBs like Smart and Yenga can get back into position at LB.
So I guess I agree with Ponymon, but think that OT is up there as well. -CoS
I would hate to start rs freshman at OT, that is asking a whole lot. Will weighs over 220, and lacks the speed to cover at outside lb, he sure doesn't have the speed to play safety.
I was thinking Poynter or Lobo, openining up a Guard Spot for a RS Freshman like LeRibus or Brooks. -CoS
Joey and Sean have the same problem Burley has.....bad feet, and not athletic enough to play tackle. That's why Burley was getting all of those dad-gum holding penalties all year, he was playing out of position.
Here are the profiles for the 6 offensive line freshman that redshirted this year:

Brooks is the tallest freshman that we redshirted at 6-5. He probably should be a tackle given that the size of the remaining 5 appears to be better suited for the guard and center positions. JMHO
I think the most glaring positions in need of JUCO help are OL (specifically tackles) and linebackers...I think we're in bad shape next year if we don't add any new players at those positions

Long live the Circle of Champions!
Right guard scares me, too, after losing a four-year starter in Caleb Peveto.
For what it's worth, I was told that the most impressive redshirt linemen were LeRibeus, Kelly Turner and then a tie between Brooks and Lilly.
Does anybody know whether we still have a shot at the Okla St Transfer Alex Odiari who started some games as a Freshman at Oklahoma St. I picked on some rumors he was trying to establish his eligibility to enroll at SMU-and posted them long ago. High School teammate of Leonard-he'd fill one gap right away. Hope the Coaching change doesn't ruin this.
That'd be HUGE Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
