Depends on how you look at it, but Bartel's defection is only the beginning of players getting offered "help to find another school."
Run with that however you want.

re: So Varsity Shop..Even though you believe Jucos could help us win a few games now, you support adding none?....That is an interesting take which places you in a small minority on this board
Yes SoCal I am more interested in the big picture than whether we beat Tulsa this weekend. As far as being in the majority or minority on this board.... that really is not important to me.
re: Most think those ‘few wins now’ are critical in building some momentum (recruiting, attendance and otherwise) around here.I agree with Mickey, selective Jucos for specific needs. Hardly the answer, but simply another option for much needed immediate help.
I really don't think JUCO's are the panacea you think they are. I honestly do not know the answer to this question.....but could most of these JUCO's everyone seems so in favor of that are at these other schools like Fresno State and San Jose State actually qualify and pass the SMU academic curriculum?
These "wonderful" JUCOS you refer to......could they pass SMU courses that they are passing at Fresno State?
Not every JUCO is going to want to come here, and of those that would..... how many would have a chance at passing the course work?
Look I am not going to scream bloody murder if they bring in a few JUCOs, but we just have a differing opinion on the JUCO's value and what is best for the long term of SMU football.....no crime....we just disagree. (and by the way I predict your side of this issue will eventually win)

The 13 scholarships that I was referring to were the sophomore class eligibity wise. Any JUCOs that sign will be in this class.

JUCOs could also count towards last year's 25 man limit if they enroll at midterm. Kinda like greyshirts. I don't think we didn't used our full allotment last year, correct? I remember about 22-23.

Lets get relative!! 1. (jucos)- better whatch out!. They will be seen as outsiders by the players who've been selected and worked hard,at first!. To be accepted by the stangs you gotta bleed with the the stangs. It might take long time for them to be accepted. Some people are worring about chat ont his site being divisive. (Jucos) are a far more immediate threat than any clamorings written here.
2. (rivals100 over rated)- Look and compair rosters of our opponents. not muct difference in size and weight. Get the Play Makers on the field.
3. Here's the deal! You! are the Boss!!. and you are going to get to select one State Champion player for your team for each position on the field. BOSS you can only choose from one division. Here is your division choices! 1A,2A,3A,4A-D1,4A-D2,4A-TAPPS,5A-d1,5A-d2,5A-TAPPS. Now go to rivals100 and see how you did.

Corby-
Who else's feelings has Bennett hurt that will leave?
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

You guys act like coaches at successful schools have never run players off the team. If someone has a consistently poor attitude, you can be damned sure that they're going to get booted if their scholarship can be offered to a better player. It's football. Feelings are for girls teams.

You're exactly right! Don't be naive. Cleaning out some of the bus riders and steak eaters is probably in order. Ever watched the sideline during the game... and I don't mean the coaches. Coach Bennett knows what needs to be done.

I mentioned this before but wasn't specific on the game..At the ElPaso game my son and I were apalled at Bartel laughing and kidding around with another player on the bench while the defense was struggling on the field. Bartel was so involved in his playful behavior that he was oblivious to what was going on on the field..i.e. another whipping of the Ponies. That attitude has got to go.
Long live Inez Perez!

Nobody knows what the final scholarship count will be, but as of a few weeks ago, the coaches were using 18 as their working number.
We know the coaches prefer sign high school kids (5 years in the system, better % that they can stay eligible academically and whatnot). But I don't think this coaching staff has ever been adverse to going the JUCO route when it makes sense (e.g. Bobby Chase, an experienced QB for next year). So I still don't quite see what the issue is. We DO pursue JUCOs when it makes tactical sense.

Specific names are irrelevant at this point. I'm not saying Bennett is wrong. Hell, I'd probably run off a few as well. But at the same time, when kids are signed out of high school and decide to attend SMU, it would probably be a sign of decency to let them earn their degrees that they've sorta worked towards. Because they aren't the most talented football players doesn't exactly warrant awful treatment. Just ask yourself if you would like your child going through that hundreds of miles away from home, especially when they're doing all they can for the guy. Be honest?
That will take a pretty nice toll on the grad rates as well. And is it really a kids fault when he's seen cutting up on the sideline. It's just a facade to hide the utter embarrassment and shame.
