Use plenty of profanity at home so that your children will not be traumatized by the 'naughty words' that they'll be using frequently by 6th grade anyway?

I thought several times about saying something, but I was worried it would draw more of our 5 year old's attention to it. I just hoped he would leave, and he did.

It might be cute on Southpark, but not in my house.

No. No. No. Find a police officer (not a yellow shirt) and let them talk to them about their behavior.

I agree, if the AWAY fans are PO'd at your halftime show, you've done a nice job. Y'all need to get this straight: The MOB cannot and has no desire to march; they are in the business of SATIRE. Look it up. Yes, they could have used another term besides "[deleted]," but this idea that they have to apologize is absurd.

The MOB is the last of their breed, i think. UVA Pep Band did the EXACT same thing as the MOB from the 50's on through the 80's (?), that is until they went Morgantown and did a halftime show about how West Virginians marry their siblings. In front of the WV GOVERNOR. Not on their home turf, in MORGANTOWN. Think about that. Which is why after that they didn't have a band at all for more than a decade, and they now have a generic marching band.

Only thing I agree with is the objection to the term "[deleted]" at a family sporting event. They should have given that a lot more thought. Other than that: this is a band who runs around wearing fedoras and clown outfits. It's a JOKE. It's clear that they don't take themselves all that seriously, so why must everybody else. Relax a little bit.

For those wondering...

The MOB and Stanford are "Scatter Bands". They're the only schools playing D-1 football that have this type of band. UVa's Pep band was a scatter band until 2003 or 2004. The AD eliminated the pep band as Knuckle noted because of the WVU inbred half-time bit.

The Ivy League schools are the other schools that have bands that employ the "scatter" method.

They all have their own quirky and ironic titles.

The most ironic name and my favorite is the Yale Precision Marching Band.

The band does not march and is not precise.

Ah, gotcha. I'll have to remember that for future reference.

Actually, while the UVA Pep Band had been getting some crap, I think they were finally replaced because some alum coughed up enough money to start a traditional marching band. And the Pep Band still played at some hockey games and stuff after the "regular" band was started, but I think that's pretty much faded out now.

Also, on the topic of bands, for some reason, Tulane didn't have a marching band for like 50 years. They had just restarted 2 years ago, but Katrina hit, so I think 2006 was actually their first time to play at a football game. Weird.

The West Virginia bit that got the Pep Band replaced at UVA occurred at the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte, NC.

I believe the Pep Band was banned from performing in some states due to earlier events. And, as SMUPhil said, the incident at the Continental Tire Bowl spelled doom for the Pep Band as it coincided with a movement among certain wealthy alums to have a "real" band represent UVA. By doing that, they've eliminated the PA announcer having to say:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, Presenting to You the finest scramble band in the ACC...It's the Award-Winning Virginia Cavalier Indoor/Outdoor Precision Marching Pep Band and Chowder Society Revue, Unlimited!"

That's it! Man, I loved that as a kid. Their team was horrible, it was the only thing to watch.

I wasn't really impressed with this group when I heard their pep band play at the SMU-UVA Women's Tourney game in Tucson about 10 years ago or so. I'd dare say Rice sounded better than they did. Maybe becoming a real marching band helped them sound better.

Yes, sounding and acting like pretty much every other school in the United States. But I guess it wasn't such a bad decision in the long run. It's just sad. There's a recurring pattern among the "Scatter Bands." They all seem to develop among athletic programs w/ crappy revenue sports. UVA had a 30 yr. NCAA football record for losses during the Pep Band's heyday, and we all know about Rice and the Ivy League. The difference is, when your team actually starts to get good, people are less likely to find the same old shenanigans as cute as they once did. In other words, it was okay to poke fun at people as long as you let them beat your @ss. I think we will continue to see the MOB's creative freedom suffer from their bowl appearance last yr, assuming their team improves, and they keep pushing the envelope at halftime.

They didn't. That's a misrepresentation (surprise!) by some Tulsa fans.

I'm not a huge MOB fan. I don't really think "[deleted]" is funny. But the response by the Tulsa fans is. Some of them want to sue us. One of them fantasized that this will drop us in the US News & World Report rankings. I'm not making this up.
