Nobody outside this board knows/cares that we used that design 50 years ago.
It's called PR. If someone thinks something about you, you can change it. but it won't change itself. I seem to recall SMU having some classes on it. Now granted it would look a little weird if Nutt came here.

You make the mistake of thinking that SMU is relevent to anyone who isn't an SMU alum. The reality is that EVERYONE associates red helmet/white logo with Arkansas. Does it really matter? No. But why not just go with the look that everyone (over 30) associates with SMU? I'm fine with any combination of SMU colors with the pony as long as it isn't white pony/red helmet.
But I do admit it looks pretty good.

As long as it is not that little "boxing" pony circa 1966. I did not like that little guy. I love the current one. (Apologies to Ponyte and especially Ponylb)

My son loves the red helmet and white pony. I love the white helmet with red pony and the appropriate striping.

I'm in the 80s uniform camp for all the reasons Longtime and others listed. They are by far the very best of the modern era. Red Mustangs on white helmets contrast much better than white on red. I prefer stripe(s) on the helmet as well.
I wouldn't mind some updates, but keep the basic premise. Those uniforms, and especially the helmets were immediately recognized when seen. I can remember watching one of those blue/grey games and thinking how much the SMU helmet stood out from the rest of the helmets.
If you want a "throwback" jersey for homecoming to get the blue hairs excited, I would be OK with that as well. But I really don't care for the all red jersey/helmet look at all. We have two strong colors. Use them both!
Whatever is selected, I hope we stay with it for a few seasons. All these changes are annoying.

Well if we can't go with white helmet, what about a conglomeration?
Anyone want to do a mock-up of blue helmet, white pony, red jersey?

I love the idea of a throwback for homecoming. I agree that we should find something good and stick with it. What I really want is for some decent options to be available for purchase. Our merchandise sucks.

We have paid for our sins many times over the last 20 years, and it's time to level the playing field, hire a legitimate coach, and go back to one of the best looking unis in college football.
A$M cheats most years, except the Frannie era.
In the 80s, they switched from white helmets with weird white stripes
down the arms on the jerseys to back to their traditional maroon helmets
from the 60s, and earlier when they didn''t cheat so much.
Let's go back to the old, but would be brand new since we haven't used
them in 35 years TRADITIONAL RED helmets The statue guy outside
of Ford would crack his lips trying to smile
"Red Mustangs on white helmets contrast much better than white on red. "
I don't really think so, Take a look
Besides, a coach wants a uni to distinguish his era from the rest, and we
haven't used this one in 35+ years. See the ugly black n blue helmets
we have now which were last used in the late 50s.

I agree with the red helmet. In fact, I would like to go back to the Hayden Fry uniforms. Red helmet, grey pants with red and blue stripes. Blue jerseys, red sox. That was a great time in SMU football history. No scandals.

I have to disagree. Red helmet and blue jersey is a terrible combination. I like the pony express look the best. However, if we are going to return to red helmets I like the Doak Walker look too. I just don't like mixing and matching red helmet with blue jersey or vice versa. I could even go for putting player numbers on the red helmet like Alabama or putting SMU on the helmet if there is fear of confusion with the razorbacks helmet.

Red helmet, blue jersey...not a good look.
And the Mustang should be the only thing on our helmets. Mustang or nothing at all.

OK. Lets settle this once and for all with a compromise: Dave Smith era. Silver helmets w/ red and blue stripe, red jerseys with untrimmed white letters and silver pants. Simple, Ohio Statish, classic.

...would you consider a Diamond M on the helmet?
