How Did Tulsa Choose A Hurricane?

Curious: how did Tulsa choose The Golden Hurricane as its 'mascot' or 'symbol'? It's a LONG way from any coastline! I've always wondered... :hmm:

I'm pretty sure "golden hurricane" is okie slang for a tornado. Either that or watching the toilet flush.

"The name Golden Hurricane" originated in 1922. Head football coach Howard Archer, after a remark about 'roaring through opponents' had considered
'Golden Tornadoes.' But that tag was already taken by another team, so our name evolved meteorologically to the Golden Hurricane."

I am from Tulsa, and the story that I had always heard was that they were origanally the Tulsa Tornado, but a real tornado hit close to Tulsa and killed some people. There were complaints from Tulsans that a tornado was not an appropriate mascot for a christian school. So it was changed to Hurricane, (an even more destructive act of nature.) Go figure.

Tulsa did not select Golden Tornadoes as it was used by GA Tech at that time. We wore gold jerseys and "tore through opponents" like a tornado. Since that name was taken, they chose Hurricane as a similar weather phenomenon.
