Please, under Bennett the defense became the weakest part of the team. Cavan's defenses could at least stop the option. You claim that Bennett knows so much about coaching, but to know and to act are one and the same.

I have been saying Bennett would be a Big XII DC after he leaves SMU for years. I am sure he will have nothing but nice things to say about SMU on the recruiting trail.

Thankfully we don't compete with the Big XII for recruits then.

dont knock on PB, he is/was a proven DC in the BigXII

Does he get to bring Newman, Howard, Butler, Leber, Simoneau, Cooper, McGraw, Faggins (huh-huh), Washington etc. with him? He's not getting that kind of talent at Baylor.

Baylor, at least in the past has shown a willingness to recruit border line students. I believe Dave Roberts has some highly touted classes.

missed tackles.... a coach can put the guy in the right place every time, but the player must finish... a coach can put a player in the right place every time, but if the player doesn't stick to "HIS or HER" assignment then it doesn't matter who the coach is. Plenty of times this year our guys have been in position to make a play but failed to do so... AND YES I'm calling out the players on this one. PB took the blame after the NAVY game and the OSU game, but that was complete [deleted]. HE Coached the team perfectly those weeks. Unfortunately when a safety is told to stay over top of Rashaun Woods "NO MATTER WHAT," and the safety decides to not drop deep and help the corner, there is not much a coach can do except pull the player, which he did... and go get a tape of every time we lost playing against the option. the coach can only drill it into a players head so many times not to crash down on the fullback when you have the QB, or to not take the QB when you have the pitch man... he did what he could with the players he had. his track record speaks for itself!

Are you saying Cavan drilled it in better? Oh, and I agree, his track record does speak for itself.

Cavan v. Option
1997: Navy L
Rice W
1998: Rice L
Air Force L
Navy W
1999: Rice W
2000:Rice L
2001: Rice W

4-4...... not bad unless you want to add in all of those TCU games which drops him to 5-8.... still doesnt get you to a bowl game

Neither did Bennett, but I will take my chances with Cavan's defense. And under Fran TCU played a modified option, not the same one everyone else has been running for 150 years.

sounds like Bennett recruited himself a bunch of individualists, anarchists and imcompetents at SMU...nobody was doing what the brilliant man was saying!

We should all hold our heads in shame for not recognizing his greatness. SMU lost the greatest coach that never was.

I don't think Cavan had much to do with the defense. The schemes to defend the option were put in by Eric Schumann when he was DC here.

Wasn't our defense one of the best in C-USA last year? If you are going to highlight the bad, you have to highlight the good, too.

One last time...Cavan had nothing to do with the defensive part of his teams other than to have hired Eric Schumann as his DC. Schumann was the genius behind "Cavan's" defense.

if you consider 5th best in CUSA (75th FBS) enough to be "one of the best"

question: where is cavan? how many nfl teams contacted him to come coach while he was at smu? how many players did cavan coach/recruit that were:
a. drafted
b. lasted more then 3 years in the NFL (practice squad doesn't count)
c. are still in the NFL

IT's not the MODEL, IT's the Players... PB has great schemes with the right players. his failure was not being able to adjust his ideas to the skill level of players he was coaching....
