We've added this item to your cart to show you the new coach. Sometimes, Athletic Directors require that Head Coach hirings be discreet and unannounced. When we choose to tell you who the new SMU Head Football coach is, we display him only in the cart.

Johnson, 50, is familiar with Georgia football, having coached at Georgia Southern from 1997 to 2001 and won Division I-AA national championships there in 1999 and 2000, while recording a 62-10 record.

Hey, PhirePhilBennett....glad to see your location is spent on the SMU page of my website devoted to the history of the Southwest Conference helmets. It took over four months of research and building, and went up in April of 2002. Glad you like it....

It is what it is.

Other than Texas' national championship, are any of the Big 4 or Ark better off for leaving the SWC?

Arguably not.

i might be wrong but why would Johnson come to Dallas?

1. paid about $1.5 mill per year (base + benefits)
2. downgrading from a good Navy situation to a dire SMU problem
3. navy games draw on average 35k fans a game. program has a significant donor base and impressive list of powerful alums
4. prestige of coaching at a service academy - USNA is a national treasure
5. he is the "football god of annapolis"...

can anyone provide any reasonable counterpoints? i am just trying to see why he would come here...

He can certainly have a more flexible offense here or elsewhere because he won't be stymied by the lack of players he can recruit. He might have peaked there and wants a new challenge-who knows. The rumors could be bogus and he stays too. But the fact remains he can coach and overachieve and those are huge when it comes to winning here.

Have you been to Annapolis? Most of MD sucks, but Annapolis is a jewel. I'll take Annapolis over Dallas or Houston anyday.

it's not dallas vs. annapolis.

its a non-conference affiliated program with guys in the military vs. a school in a conference recruiting guys based on football talent
