Had an Interesting Cavan Conversation Today.....two good old boys from Georgia and I had a lively conversation at a little Memphis joint called Zinnies today. They said Cavan was GREAT his first couple of years at Georgia, in fact,m they said he was the SEC Soph of the year? Anyway, according to these dudes, Cavan basically turned into a drunk his Junior and Senior year, was always in the bars, found drunk off his [deleted] in around campus all the time and his performances REALLY fell off his last two years...anybody else heard these stories / rumors? Long Live Larry Munson.
worked with a Georgia "good ole boy" who claims he and his brother met Cavan just a couple of years before SMU hired him. This guy said he and his brother came away agreeing Cavan was a "1st class jerk". When pressed for why, I think he said something along the lines of Cavan being aloof and thought he was too special to be socializing with the likes of my buddy (who was a super nice guy) and his brother. I remember thinking at the time he might fit in very well at SMU
I lived in Georgia for a while and my recollection is that the Dawg Nation thought pretty highly of Cavan. The Georgia legislature thought enough of him to commend him with a house resolution, a copy of which can be found here (http://www.legis.ga.gov/legis/2005_06/fulltext/hr1901.htm).
If an SMU booster thought enough of one of its own, it would be pretty easy with the right contribution to a rep or senator to get a similar resolution. Hell five grand and we could probably get jtstang day at the House, or suspend the senate's regular order of business to take up and consider Senate resolution xxx recognizing Stallion's model.
A RESOLUTION Commending Stallion; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, Stallion graduated from Southern Methodist University in the halcyon days of the Pony Express; and WHEREAS, he is a former patron of Milo Butterfingers; and WHEREAS, in 1976, Stallion performed a keg stand for a staggering minute and twenty-seven seconds; and WHEREAS, Stallion has been a consistent poster on PonyFans.com, having eclipsed the 10,000 post mark earlier this year and earning the title "Stallicious"; and WHEREAS, Stallion manages to practice a little law in between his numerous posts ; and WHEREAS, he proposed the "Model" to return SMU football to its former glory; and WHEREAS, Stallion continues to serve as an ambassador of goodwill and indefatigable support for the entire Mustang Nation; and WHEREAS, friends and colleagues marvel at the enthusiasm and energy he continually directs toward his demanding work in promoting the "Model" on PonyFans.com and greatly admire him for his unwavering commitment to excellence; and WHEREAS, Southern Methodist University and the citizens of this state are very fortunate to have one of the nationÌ
JesuitPony, great work. SMU's own Todd Smith, the distinguished representative from Bedford (or Hurst or Euless...somewhere over there) could even author it.
Oh, but wait....is there a sunshiner-sympathetic rep amongst the house that is going to call a point of order?
Just to put drinking into perspective, while too much booze can be a huge detriment to one's ability to perform, it must be remembered that Bear Bryant was known to throw back a few in his day. Caven is gone because of his record, not because of any suspicion of EtOH abuse. One can imagine if Caven had produced like Bear Bryant, then most of us would have thrown back a few (Champaign).
