I hope it's not Paul Johnson. We need somebody with more wow...beating Notre Dame in their worst season in many moons isn't much to write home about. If we want to move up the credibility ranks, we need to run the spread or something that kids see as the hot new offense out there.
He has landed a coach. This was solidified well over a week ago. He has not made the announcement. He will. Also: "demoralized"? Duh. ![]()
Strategy QuestionIf Johnson is indeed our next coach (which I don't think he is), wouldn't it make more sense to announce it prior to the army navy game as make that conversation numero uno throughout the game?????
I don't know where the lack of recruiting to Texas comes into play. There is about 1/3 of his roster from kids from this state.
Now, I do recognize that he is getting "different" kids to play with the academy than what we were getting or what TCU is getting and so forth. That said, somewhere he and his staff have cultivated multiple relationships with coaches in this state. Now, if he is the coach, I think those relationships with these coaches will count for something. A level of trust has been established. That coach can tell a kid, "You'll want to play for him because of X.'' Plus, he may hire some assistants with ties to the state. That will help. The challenge will be getting the kid to commit to his style over TCU, UNT or Tulsa. Will it work? Depends on how the option offense will be run and how quickly the defense will be re-tooled. It is ignorant to think he can't make the statement his recruiting is questionable. You won't see it for the 2008 season. But you could after that.
