Paul Johnson would be a bigger hire than we've had in several decades.

I had no idea who Paul Johnson was until today. I liked the MySpace video about his 100th win. Maybe he can bring his MoJo to SMU. Go Ponies!

Paul Johnson would be the kind of hire the rest of the country thinks we have no shot at getting. That, by definition, is WOW.

His offenses at Navy are a thing of beauty. If he can get some serious athletes at SMU, it's on.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

What will we do with our current nuecleus of players. We don't have an OL to block anybody in running situations, not enough backs to run the triple option, and receivers that will never get to catch the ball. PJ is not the right man for the job here, whether he is a good coach or not. We have to continue to throw the ball 70% of the time and run it 30%.

And it will be the job of our new coach, whomever that may be to worry about that. That is why he will be getting $1.5 million.

Or I guess we could do the obvious and hire bigdaddy since he has all the answers.

I am not endorsing Johnson as opposed to other options (if they exist), but I think he could work with what the team has until he can adjust. The "Utah Option", which we run with O-line zone reads is not that off his "flexbone". I have concerns as well...don't really want to start over...but I figure that happens not matter what.

However, while on the subject, didn't you say to watch Orsini's history? Johnson and Orsini were at Navy at same time when he was OC in the 90s. That's a stretch, and it might not have been what you where thinking, but it does follow his history.

Wow! Bigger than Ron Meyer and Bobby Collins? Well, that certainly puts things in perspective. In that case, I hope it comes to fruition.

I don't have all the answers, but any youth league football coach knows that you assemble a team based on what you are trying to do offensively and defensively. We are not an option offense. Hell we are not even a running team period. Our QB lead the team in rushing (running for his life) and we want to bring in a guy who runs the triple option. He is a great coach, but no a fit here. Now there is a chance he can come in and not run the triple option. Coaches are versitle in their knowledge of the game. SMU does not equal triple option. The obvious is to be realistic about the coaching hire. Orsini knows what he has in the talent here. He is not gonna screw one of his friends or hisself in this hire.
