Paul Johnson -- great hire!

Postby tristatecoog » Thu Nov 29, 2007 11:21 pm

Wasn't he as, or more, successful at Georgia Southern as Jim Tressel was at Youngstown?

From my college football encyclopedia:
Navy football went 3-30 from 2000 to 2002. But coach Paul Johnson has revived the school's fortunes with a refined triple-option attack and a ball-hawking defense. In 2003 and 2004, Navy won a combined 18 games and competed in consecutive bowl games for only the second time in school history. They've now competed in five straight, winning two out of four. They lost 25-24 to a 10-3 Boston College team last year.

In Sagarin, Navy is rated #76 this year. Houston is #86. Doesn't Baylor seem pretty excited about Briles, the coach of the #86 team?

How much better can Navy be with the restrictions they have? PJ runs a different offense which I believe is well suited for non-BCS schools.

Remember PJ's first game at Navy? 38-7 win at SMU (when the berm caught on fire from the fireworks). I'd be pumped if PJ came to Houston, but y'all want a coach who hasn't been on the sidelines since 1998 and QUIT mid-season?

He started at Navy in 2003:

"Navy football went 3-30 from 2000 to 2002. But coach Paul Johnson has revived the school's fortunes with a refined triple-option attack and a ball-hawking defense. In 2003 and 2004, Navy won a combined 18 games and competed in consecutive bowl games for only the second time in school history."

It looks like he's created instant results. The foundation is in place to get to a bowl game next year or definitely the year after. I bet JW can run the triple-option attack with aplomb.

Instant results are good. At this point, I trust Orsini. I want a guy who can turn it around within 2 years. I think Johnson could do it. Time will tell if we even get him.
