Why Paul Johnson So Threatens Some Sages On This Board

Because if he comes here and wins with average talent, then maybe there is something to coaching after all.

Well my first choice is still Tery Bowden, but anyone who knows football can see Paul Johnson's teams are well prepared. Coach Johnson I believe would be an excellent recruiter here over time and he has recruited nationally at several schools. He really does knows how to find talented players maybe others don't and has proved it on several occasions.......The old BS of we're going to recruit 300 miles around Dallas and win did not work as all we know...........If Coach Johnson comes hear, alot of people will be surprised how well he will do.

I won't be one of them.

In fact, I'll be an instant SMU fan if you guys pull this off. The triple option is looked at as antiquated and out of date, but every spread team I see on TV runs the option from the shotgun and it's called genious...

Funny....all of the innovative defensive coaches out there HATE to play Navy. Pete Carroll said in one of the Nike Coach of the Year Clinics that USC would never play Air Force (under DeBerry) because "it's too hard to defend that stuff". "That Stuff" was the triple option, something that Johnson runs far more effective than Air Force did.

PJ's triple option is run from under center so it hits at the heart of the defense much quicker than from the shotgun, making the dive back a bigger threat...but for some reason this is considered archaic and barbaric.

Maybe it is, but he's been taking a club to a gun fight at Navy for years and he's won 8 games or more for 5 consecutive years, being out-manned every single week with the exception of other service academies.

I'm on board with the flexbone option if it means our opponents dread playing us and have to spend extra time preparing their defense.
It's a crappy job but someone's gotta do it.

Put it this way, I'm a Maryland Terp booster/homer as well as SMU. Maryland is the only school in the state of Maryland, other than Navy, w/a D1 team. Since Virginia has Virginia Tech, Maryland has no true rival in football.

Its been mentioned on more than one occasion that the Terps should schedule Navy every year. Certainly, Army/Navy is the biggest rivalry out there, but Maryland/Navy could be a great inter-state game, if played every year. Simply, as a Terp fan, and many others feel this way, we want no part of that offense. None!

Literally, Johnson is a genius, and God forbid he has actual athletes, and a QB who can throw as well. It would be near impossible to stop. Get this guy, Orsini. He'll win, we'll score and be respected.

A 'wow' hire isn't a washed up Bowden, its a guy that the coaching community covets and thinks is above the Hilltop. Nobody understands Johnson to SMU b/c he has BCS written all over him. We pull this off, its the ultimate 'Wow', b/c he's the most coveted man on the board
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones
