Help an outta stater

Postby mrydel » Thu Oct 23, 2003 10:00 am

I am sorry to say that I have no specific knowledge at all as to the abilities of our new starting quarterback. Although I have great doubt that a true freshman in his first game can compete at an experienced college level, I would be interested in knowing his strong and weak points. For instance, does he have the ability to take a snap from a shotgun formation and run left or right as did Flanigan when we needed some run yardage? Can he throw on the run? I would like to think that as he developes that we would have some additional threat in the backfield rather than just KK. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Yes, Phillips can run. He's probably not as fast in a flat sprint as Flanigan was, but he's close. And he's very elusive. More than that, he has a real strong arm. Coach Bennett said he has the strongest arm on the team - even stronger than Bartel. What I don't know is whether he has any touch, or whether he can throw on the run. I remember seeing him throw in preseason - he drills the ball in there pretty good, but he can have one sail on him every now and then when he gets too excited. I'm eager to see him play - making the trip to Tulsa largely to check him out.

I am a BIG Chris Phillips fan ( watched him for 2 yrs at Bishop Lynch ) he has a strong arm, a soft touch, Runs with long strides so it take a while for him to pick up speed, is tough to bring down ( I wish he would go down quicker at times ) against Highland park he made a few mistakes early on but settled down as the game went on. He gave HP'd defense all they could handle ( this could have been due to good coaching ) but I'd say mainly because he threw accurately, faked the throw before he took off then HP could not bring him down on the first, or second tackle. As the season progressed Chris showed his true leadership qualities even when things did go well... then on to the state championship game where he was outstanding. ( Bishop Lynch won )

Upside - He will be good now and great later.

Down side - Fans may expect too much.

Warning to all - Coach Bennett has stated that he does not have command of the complete package but will use the ones that Phillips and the team are ready for.

Unfortunately I will not be going to the Tulsa game BUT will be listening with batted breath as to how the team performs with Phillips at the helm and how Coach Bennett utilize his talents.
I hope they all do really well and win one so ya'll can stop bashing the team and staff.

Yes ya'll can have your say but don't embarrass individuals, the whole program is young under Coach Bennett and I for one expected better and more, now reality has set in I will settle for a few ray's of sun shine, a lot of frustration and disappointments. ( I coached a team which had two losing seasons ) It was not fun for all involved.

Good Luck to the team this weekend.

By the sound of it and reading some posts Chris Phillips did all he could do with the limited plays allowed.
For those of you who were at the game.. did he really drag TU players and was he really hard to bring down, The radio announcers made it sound awesome (A Ray of Hope), did the run plays look like they were designed or was this the QB making the read ?

I'm disappointed that he did not get more playing time but sooner or later he will be playing. Can't wait.

Hang in there all you true Mustang Fans

Phillips looked like a fullback or tight end (a man amongst boys), should we find a brilliant quarterback, Phillips will be on the field somewhere.
