BCS Openings and Paul Johnson

Postby ponydawg » Fri Nov 30, 2007 10:58 am

PJ's name has pretty much been up for every BCS job opening that there has been over the last few years. Now while his name has been up for a ton of bcs jobs he has yet to get one. I do believe that he has not gotten a bcs job yet because the recruiting model is so different at Navy. Yes, he might not have the recruiting experience to get a top bcs job, but he does have everything else that they look for and that is why he is consistently up for those upper tier jobs. Is the recruiting difference to big of a risk for a school that wants to win a National Championship, maybe. Is it to big a risk for a school who has only had one winning season in the last 20 years and just went 1-11? No.

When was the last time we thought we could get a coach that had SO MANY bcs schools interested in him?

1997: 10-3
1998: 14-1
1999: 13-2
2000: 13-2
2001: 12-2
2002: 2-10 (first year at navy, and half of his victories were against SMU)
2003: 8-5
2004: 10-2
2005: 8-4
2006: 9-4
2007: 7-4 (with one game left to play plus his 5th straight bowl)

I do believe this is true. I don't think he will even get mild play with Nebraska or Geogia Tech whose job description seems diametrically different than Johnson(ie a charismatic, exciting Coach who excites recruits). He's been a candidate and picked over by many BCS schools. I think he is using SMU to get leverage for a BCS school but will likely not be strongly considered for a BCS job other than Duke. I think SMU gets stuck holding its Johnson. Probably realizes he needs to prove himself in a traditional Model to get to the BCS. There's a reason Johnson is not getting these jobs-and it is because he is an unproven recruiter working in a completely different Model.

Read the articles quoting the Georgia Tech AD after firing a boring Coach Chan Gailey who just went to 5 straight bowls. You don't replace boring with boring. They are looking for a charismatic motivtor which was the trait the AD identified as missing from the previous coaching staff

SMU needs a charismatic coach more than GT does. SMU has a lot to overcome that is not overcome by just Xs and Os and game management.

Find me a quote where Johnson was referred to as boring or lacking charisma.

I just do not know for sure that it is Johnson, but I am going to be very happy if it is, just like I could be with several others. Look at our past history of hires and there is no comparison. Look at our past history on the field and there is no reason we deserve someone of this historical talent. I really do not think we are quite in position for Carroll, Spurrier, or even Nutt.

SMU needs to win and win period.
If we go to 5 sraight bowls and we need a more charismatic coach to get over the next hump, then great, we can fight that battle then. But for now, lets just win some games.

1997: 10-3
1998: 14-1
1999: 13-2
2000: 13-2
2001: 12-2
2002: 2-10 (first year at navy, and half of his victories were against SMU)
2003: 8-5
2004: 10-2
2005: 8-4
2006: 9-4
2007: 7-4 (with one game left to play plus his 5th straight bowl)

So we're under the assumption that only big name "charasmatic" coaches will recruit well at SMU. Nice. Despite knowing very little about Johnson's personality (coaches in a small media market), and knowing nothing about his experience at recruiting at a school with a relatively "normal" model, we have assumed this will be his shortcoming.

Let me put it this way, does his success at Navy (admittedly a unique place for recruits), inturn forecast a recruiting disaster at SMU? Where is the logic, other than he doesn't have a great degree traditional experience?
