PhillipsJust saw him featured on WB33 sports (yes, I was watching WB33 news). Man, he sure looks the part of a big-time D-1 college QB. Tall, big, strong arm, and wearing #7 (yeah, I was thinking Michael Vick). I am really looking forward to watching him play. Also, after hearing Bennett on the news and on Norm's show today I get the feeling he is having to bite his tongue not to get too excited about this kid.

Re: PhillipsI was wondering when the first Michael Vick comparison would pop up. Very different players (of course - every player is different from Michael Vick.)
Consider him a microcosm of SMU football. There's a lot of talent in this young kid, but he will make mistakes, he will have his struggles and he will need time to mature and get more experienced and stronger. But in the long run, he will be good - perhaps very good. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re: PhillipsI saw a part of one of those stories that said Keylon's carries would go up because Phillips is playing. Why? Why did we go through all of this upheaval for the kid to just hand off to Kincaid? Suit me up, I'll do that. Let's let this kid use his natural abilities and intincts. What is the worst that could happen? 0-8.
All that said, I am looking forward to seeing him when the Ponies come back to town. GO Mustangs!! Beat the Bee Hives!!1 Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!
Re: PhillipsI believe that was the sportswriter's comment. I imagione we'll see pretty much the same type of offense with maybe a few more rollouts if Phillips makes a play or two early.
Re: PhillipsZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ..snooze football. i could have fallen asleep last week if it wasn't so hot - what do we have to lose?? another game?? ...i wouldn't be opposed to the hut, hut, run, run.
Re: PhillipsI would hope that we will see a lot of the freshman WR's who performed well in the SJSU game. Their names escape me.
Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!
Re: PhillipsPellerin and J. Cleveland. I agree, lots more Pellerin please.
Re: PhillipsCoach needs to let the big dog hunt. Every play that does not intail handing it to KK should be a role out option - and he should take off down field on half of those. PLEASE let him really play coach - your loyal fans deserve some fun finally.
Re: PhillipsRecognizing that Phillips is a true freshman, If Coach doesn't let the boy loose so he can show what he can do, then Bennett falls another notch down the coach ladder. If all Phillips is going to do is hand off to Knicaid...0-8 here we come!
Long live Inez Perez!
Re: PhillipsArkpony I know what your saying, but it will probably depend upon how much of the playbook Phillips knows. He can't just walk out on to the field by himself and run free. The rest of the team has to be on the same page with the same play for anything to work. This is, after all, his first game. My guess would be that they tried to get some plays practiced that utilize his strengths, but that we will still see a fair number of KK plays. Unless Phillips has been able to memorize the whole play book and they were able to practice all the plays, the offensive plays available through the game for him are going to be limited. This is probably why Wallis will play also in order to be able to utilize more plays than Phillips is going to be able to handle by himself. Each week, his repertory of plays will increase.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: PhillipsI imagine we will see the same garbage....with KK and zero imagination. Has there been 1 trick play? 1 fake punt? anything to the imagination? - i don't care if we are 0-8, give me something..
Re: Phillips.....all that have to do is put him back in the shotgun like Flannigan, Vincent Young and Michael Vick and let him improvise and that will add a huge wrinkle to this offense.

Re: PhillipsFor whatever reason, Bartel got himself into some kind of major funk this season. His usual picture perfact release started looking like Wallis' sidearm from last year. Inexplicable.
So, I think there will be at least one major new wrinkle in the offense – some completed passes. I also think that at some point (either through good scouting or after getting burned a few times), Tulsa will have to respect Phillip's running ability – maybe going so far as keeping a linebacker or saftey in to shadow him. Even if Phillips hasn't familiarized himself with all the plays (some half dozen large 3-ring binders comprise the "playbook"), I don't see the offense being scaled back much more than what it already is. Hopefully, Phillip's athleticism will offset most of his mistakes. I honestly think it's going to be a very interesting game. Everyone is intrigued with Pellerin's potential (finally a big, strong receiver who can catch), but Jay'Mond Cleveland is the more polished of the two receivers, having caught 84 balls in Baytown Lee's pass-happy offense last year. Re: PhillipsLook for more rolls and Q draws. Otherwise, it will be the same. That doesn't mean the results won't be a lot better though.
Re: PhillipsI would just like to see those guys use their bodies, like they did against SJSU. And let us play Alley Oop for once instead of just defending it.
Not knock on Comet or Rushbrook. comet jjust doesn't seem to have the step he once did. Rushbrook can not be faulted for his effort. It's just time to utilize new eapons if their redshirt has been expended. Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!
