BCS Meltdown

Postby Pony Soup » Fri Nov 30, 2007 8:29 pm

Could it happen again? If both #1 Mizzou and #2 West Virginia lose tomorrow, that leaves Ohio State and Georgia to play for the title. This is one of the biggest problems with the BCS - there is NO WAY a team that loses its own conference should be playing for the title. Georgia is not even participating in the SEC championship game. Furthermore, one of its losses came to a team that is playing in the final, Tennessee.

Although this is unlikely, it would be a total travesty and highlight the need to switch to a playoff sooner rather than later. Oklahoma lost the Big 12 and managed to edge out Auburn for a shot to play USC a few years back. Fortunately, USC dominated them. But if we get the chance to see this play out, the SEC's UGA would probably wreck Ohio State.

Playoff anyone?

If LSU wins the SEC, can they skip ahead of Georgia. Both have only two losses and LSU would have won the conference.

The BCS will make sure this does not happen. Even if they have to pay somebody.

That is the hope, but I dont trust the system. How is OSU #4 with a loss to a, then, unranked Illinois.

This is a bogus argument, they are measuring different things. A conference chmpion is the best out of a small group over 8-9 games. The teams playing for the national championship are the best over 12-13 games.

Say, for example, team A and team B are in the same conference. Suppose team A goes 8-4(8-0) and team B goes 11-1(7-1), with their only loss being to team A. Team A would be conference champs because of their conference records, but when determining which teams deserve to play for the national championship, conference records don't matter.

Winning your conference should absolutely be a prerequisite for playing for the title.

What about Notre Dame? What about the scanrio above if all conference champions have 2 losses? The national championship IS NOT based on your performance in conference games!

As I stated in my playoff proposal, ND should join a conference. And the current system is terrible. Incentivizing schools to play TERRIBLE non conference games is just plain stupid.

As for all conf champions having two losses, so what? How can you say that (and this is a hypothetical) that LSU should play for a title if they lose to, say, Florida in the SEC title game?
