Thx for your son's commitment to winning and to SMU. Our impatience is directed at our recent history, not at the players who chose to play for the Ponies.
2008 will bring the team the discipline, hope and wins, he and everyone wants.
Our 20 years in purgatory are about to end. Everyone will want to be here when it happens.
Yes, he is committed till the end. He loves SMU, but just wishes that a lot of the current players would take this seriously. He knows how fortunate he is to be at SMU and receive a great education. Yes, I said Great. I had a coach from Stanford tell me when they were recruiting him that SMU was a good school and that Stanford was great. BS! SMU has always been a great school and I'm proud he chose it. I'm also proud of his dedication to the team and his wanting things to improve. Thanks to everyone who supports him also.
POLF- What does your son and his teammates think about PJ...?
There was some excitement when Bowden and Shula were mentioned, but I'm not getting the feeling they are as excited about Johnson. I think the team is probably frustrated as well.
i bet its tough for the players...i just didnt think that Bowden or Shula would come to SMU.
I was hoping one of them would have come to boost the morale and instill some discipline. The last few weeks were not so good from an insiders take on things. After the firings, some of the obnoxious players were cussing and back talking the coaches to their face and refused to do what was asked of them. Not to mention coming to practice or lifting hungover. That's not a good example for the redshirts. They came in this year with high hopes of being on a winning footbal team and going to a bowl. I know there were a lot of high expectations.

That is unbelievably sad. Thats why a PJ makes sense. Think Shula will instill discipline or how about Bowden?
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

That was one of the things that cost Phil his job. Sloppy, undisciplined play, week after week, year after year.

I personally don't care who it is as long as they can get this team to be unified. When your own son wishes there would be bedchecks like at OU, you know there's a problem. There's just no discipline on or off the field. It takes discipline in both areas to have a chance at building a winning team. I truly believe if someone comes in a becomes a drill sergeant if they have to, we will see that only the strongest shall survive and that's who we need to represent the Mustangs on and off the field.

Whatever. Johnson is the type of coach who designs a system to fit his players. At Hawaii he threw more, at Navy with less QB talent he has to run more. That's what good coaches do they adjust their system to fit the athletes.
If Coach Johnson is coming to SMU because he is going to use it as a stepping stone to a BCS team, he might run the ball some, but he will have to have some passing in his offense for one of the big schools to write the check. He will adopt the offense to his players.
BTW my surprise pick to excel under his system would be our incoming freshman commit Cole Beasley given the numbers both passing and rushing that he put up this year. Logan Turner might also surprise under his system. Braden Smith might not do as well if rushing is the emphasis. All these players are the son of coaches, however, which means that they will have been exposed to a lot of extra "coaching" that our new head coach might find useful as he builds his team.

Braden Smith would be awesome in a run-based offense. That's what Rockwall did last year when they were really good. This year, they didn't have the super-fast running back and they were forced to use his arm more.
Smith would kill defenses with roll-out passes. The kid is Scott Smith's son. He can run the option.

Bennet did not want him under 320.
Brooks is losing weight also because he would rather play tackle.

Thanks ponyolinefan! Besides Turner, who else can play tackle? I hear Meachem has potential, but has a long way to go.

I heard Beachum just needs to get stronger. Vic can get that done. LeRibeus saw his former o-line coach today and he hopes we do get Johnson because Josh is skilled at run blocking. Interesting.

POLF - if discipline is what this program needs, then Bowden and Shula are the wrong choices. I know for a fact that discipline was a big problem at Alabama when Shula was there. http://timgayle.blogspot.com/2006/09/sh ... mpson.html
