As fas as Johnson is concerned, he is not a perfect fit for our program. And has much as you want him to come to SMU, he will not be a Mustang!! Period!

Just wondering, but how can you be so sure??

Because I happen to be in a unique situation this year that I would happen to know what is going on.

With SMU or with PJ?

Neither

Then that means you are saying you are plugged in with <put whatever name you want here as the next HC>

WOW! Stallion predicted that Bennett would continue losing with a program that had been losing for the last 15 years? He is so smart!

While we are making predictions, I predict the SEC will have more ranked teams next year than C-USA. Write it down - I really know what i'm talking about.

All of you can blame this person or that person or the lack of money or what ever. The fact remains SMU has nothing to offer a BCS Coach except money, a 5 years contract, and an ended career at the end of 5 years. Sure we have facilities, sure we have deep pocket alums, but look at the coaching history. Not one has succeeded at SMU. We don't have a good conference, we don't have soft courses etc. So a coachs like PJ & Nutt etc.can stay out of coaching for a year if they have to and go into broadcasting till the right job comes along. That assuems the GT's and the Ol'Miss of the world won't give them what they feel they deserve. At the present time the SMU job has more negatives than positives.

I have watched this program for the last 30+years and we have more minuses now then we did when we came back from the death penalty.

Orsini has to learn the hard way like Copeland :!:

Hope not, but it won't be long before @ssini is crowned Copeland II :!:

Disagree.
It is not like we are trying to hire some spare. We are losing these proven head coaches to BCS schools. If we get a coach from that original "list" (even if they all turn us down but one) then this will be a big upgrade and a great hire for a SMU team that has not done anything in over 20 years. If we do end up hiring a no name, then we can b*tch and moan.

The coaches when approched for the SMU Job reacted I am sure with "Do I look crazy?" Or they used us to increase the paycheck they will get from the school of their choice. Firing PB 5 weeks ago has not given us any edge. If Orsini's Coach of choice is bowl bound we can kiss the recruiting season goodby if no anouncement is made soon. Other schools I am sure are already using the lack of an anouncement to their advantage.

As was said earlier I am beginning to believe we can't give the job away. As a loyal supporter of the Athletic Program I will reup my Mustang memebership and by my football and basket ball season tickets and hope for the best.

You've been here for what a week?
I've been around for as long as you have, ask Prof X or Hoopfan etc.
To confirm this, PonyDoh was originally PonyBacker, on the old MustangManiacs board. My first conversation with him concerned the recruitment of Brian Boddicker (basketball player from Duncanville, wound up at UT). That would have made it sometime in the summer of 1999, so he has been around a fairly long time.

I watched 5 college football games today. In 4 of the 5 games, the announcers specifically mentioned Paul Johnson and referred to him as "the best game day coach in the country", or "one of the best X's and O's coaches in the country", or other expressions to that effect. The concensus across the country amongst his peers in coaching and amongst the media, is that the guy is brilliant. Why some people are so adamantly against his coming here, even if you doubt his ability to recruit (I saw several Texans on the playing field for Navy today), is beyond me.

Recruiting to Navy and recruiting to SMU are very different situations, there's no doubt. At one school you're asking prospective recruits to join the Marines, at the other you're asking them to join a country club. The type of players Johnson (or any other coach) would pursue for SMU would be different than at Navy, hopefully more talented and athletic and the sales pitch would be drastically different, but I have yet to see any kind of solid or rational argument to convince me that Johnson wouldnt be able to make that adjustment. It may all be a moot point if he goes somewhere else, and even if he came here we would just be another stepping stone for him, but I dont understand the level of antipathy expressed towards someone that most people outside our bubble would consider to be a genius. We could do alot worse than Paul Johnson, we already have a couple of times.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.

That is soo true, maybe he was nobodys first choice, but he is by no means a BAD choice. Either way, it looks like the argument might end up moot

PonyDoh wrote:No, b/c you, Big Daddy & Whitney Houston have made this board an anti-PJ mockery since the CBS Sportsline article came out. People that happen by are laughing at pitiful SMUs fans, for not wanting one of the hottest candidates in the country. The limited fan base we have, looks ridiculous b/c we are questioning if he's the right hire, at a school w/basically no support, no appreciable talent on the roster, and a miserable recent history.

All iI hear is, " he won't be able to recruit, we run the spread, all our talent is geared towards the spread,' and its sad, not to mention short sighted.

Ponydoh, we are all insignificant to this ordeal. Do I here you crying? PJ has not signed any contract that any of us know of. Who or what do you expect us to get to this school? This going to be a toughe task. Not sure if Orsini is the man for the job? I would not be surprised if Orsini resigns before it is over. He did not understand what he was getting himself into. We just need to sit back and wait until every school has hired their coach and we will get the scraps, or possibly steal someone either the unhappy ranks or non-coaching ranks. Should we be happy, no! And you need to express your anger at every opportunity you can.

LOL. Isn't it so funny how Stallion considers himself a talent GURU just because he predicted SMU would continue lose under poor leadership. He's a REAL GENIUS.
