Another Convert to the Stallion Modeland this from a former Coach at Rice and Duke Fred Goldsmith:
According to one former Duke coach, that's the program's biggest obstacle. "It's not a coaching problem, it's an institutional problem," said Fred Goldsmith, who coached Duke from 1994 to 1998. "It's real simple: They need to operate on the same academic standard as the rest of the ACC. (N&O article) but when coach K speaks they (duke) listens.
The Full Story-Is Coach K also on board the Stallion bandwagon now?
GT is now in play as well. Coach K came out last week and said - "Duke needs a good football program." the problem with duke: Recruiting standards. There are two academic standards: the NCAA standard and the "Duke" standard. The NCAA uses a sliding scale to qualify student-athletes. The better a high school student's grade point average, the lower his SAT score can be and vice versa. For example, a recruit with a 2.5 GPA needs 820 on his SAT to qualify. At Duke, the long-time benchmark for football recruits has been a 3.0 GPA and 1,000 on the SAT, according to former Duke coaches. The average SAT score at Duke is in the 1,400s, according to the school's Web site. At the end of Carl Franks' stint as head coach, which lasted from 1999 to 2003, Duke began to admit football recruits closer to the NCAA standard. For example, if Duke signed 18 recruits, about six would be near the NCAA level. "I don't see any change in our academic standards in the future," Alleva said. (johnson deals w/ this at Navy however- plus for him & duke.) According to one former Duke coach, that's the program's biggest obstacle. "It's not a coaching problem, it's an institutional problem," said Fred Goldsmith, who coached Duke from 1994 to 1998. "It's real simple: They need to operate on the same academic standard as the rest of the ACC. (N&O article) but when coach K speaks they (duke) listens. and the Wallace Wade Stadium sucks. duke is much like TCU, very few hang around durham or the area to attend games. its much easier to sell out Cameron Indoor Stadium w/ 8000 seats. and duke will have to pour lots of money into the program but they do have lots of money. smu has better facilities but its cusa, duke has no facilities but its the ACC. Ga Tech. Altanta, nuff said. if i were to rank em - its GaTech, smu and duke.
Sure, a man that has done something at the D1 level adopted your model.
![]() “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Another Convert to the Stallion Model
2+2 = 4 We all know this issue already. Nothing new.
The problem at Duke is that the admission requirements for fball players are significantly higher than for basketball. Bball team can admit players who meet NCAA minimum; football has a much higher threshold. The head fb coach complained about this 3 years ago and was quickly fired.
Stallion, I bet you have a mirror in every room in your house and in your office. Your Stallion model is not a stroke of genius, just logic. No one would argue that SMU and Duke and any other legitmate D-1 school wishing to compete in athletics needs to be able to attract the same talent that others school can attract.
I know several years ago changes were being made to help SMU escape the clutches of President Pye. It takes time, but changes have already taken place and more will follow. Now, SMU simply needs a coach that can capitalize. But thanks for being the smartest man about college sports, not involved in college sports.
Can you please let us know the exact date; so, we may mark our calendars. The changes that needed to be made were obvious immediately after the DP.
I have never disagreed with the content of Model talk. "Your" model is a bit too much. Also, the Model being the reason for numerous losses this year was a bit too much.
I think, beyond a shadow of a doubt, SMU needs to take a look in the mirror and truly decide what we want to be. Are we going to hold ourselves in the same light as Wake Forest, Duke, Stanford, Northwestern and all of the other academically elite non-Ivy league schools? Or, do we want to be a quality academic institution that competes with the state schools for both students and student-athletes. There are so many ways to look at a university in terms of success, but I would be interested to see our enrollment stats over the last 30 years compared to our perceived peers and area schools. I wonder if the stats would show that our enrollment has been relatively flat, while other schools have grown. Furthermore, I would also be interested to see how gifts to the school by the "common man" has also progressed over the last 30 years. Sports is not the only measure of school pride, but unfortunately, I think it plays a big role. A quality athletic program can do wonders for a university....or at least that's my thought...
The better selling point is that lowering the standards for the FB team would do all that, resulting in the ability to raise the standards for regular applicants FAR more than they already have over the past 10 years because of the larger applicant pool.
