For instance, I supposed Pete Fleps does not have any service requirement for the time he spent at Navy before coming to SMU. If you can transfer and avoid service, then I would say the Navy system is more of an advantage because you can convince kids to come and see if they fit and like it and then decide.
you can leave/transfer with no obligation in prep year, freshman and sophomore year. you are locked in your junior and senior year.

free look, helps the numbers game. can attract kids to check it out. Starters usually don't transfer. except at SMU

The academies that Navy is pulling some athletes from must only have football players because Navy's basketball teams suck every year. You want to think about that theory again Stallion?

Coach Johnson has not just won at Navy. He won 2, or was it 3, National Div.1AA titles at Georgia Southern with a 75 schalorship limitation. One of his Georgia Southern teams held it's own in a close loss to the University of Georgia

they all go to Air Force which suddenly has become a powerhouse when the same Model was applied to AF Basketball. I previously have posted articles stating that was the precise objective at AF.

Johnson has proven he can win at Ga. Southern and Navy, schools at the opposite ends of the recruiting spectrum. Recruiting and winning is apparently not an issue with him, no matter where he is.

Frankly so had Mike Dement when he came to SMU.

....and he shall again. I understood why it was time to move on-but SMU failed Mike Dement-setting his career back a decade.

I take your point, it is an excellent one. But comparing Dement and PJ is kind of ridiculous don't you think. Dement won at Cornell and UNC-G, but nothing near the equivalent of PJ's 2 national titles and bowling 5 years in a row at a service academy. FB and BB, not even close, we can't even compare apples to these oranges

I am commenting on the unique challenges of SMU more than about individual candidate. those apply to football and basketball. there appear to be few truly similar situations to SMU. I am not even arguing against Johnson, just the notion that he is a slam dunk.

Johnson is a slam dunk. I bet we are offering him a 10 year deal all garaunteed money.
But why would he leave Navy when he is a big time BCS coach in the waiting.
You can't tell me that multiple BCS teams offering similar money aren't panting after him.
I'd love to get him but I can't see us landing him.

Pony94 wrote:Navy a recruiting advantage?? I just don't see it. Please look at the steps one must take to enter the Naval Academy, in particular a nomination from an official source. This step severaly limits the pool from which athletes can be recruited... http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/steps4.htm
The advantage of recruiting is, once you start the process of being recruited by one of the academies you are pretty much off limits to the rest of the world. Most schools will not try and touch you if you get as far as some do in the process of entering an academy school, whether prep or college.
