Hawaii had at least two BCS schools back out of playing them this past year. Happens when Hawaii is too good.

did you know they tried to schedule Michigan and USC this year? none of em wanted a part of Hawaii
Uh, no. USC and Hawaii had a 3 or 4 game series which ended last year. Needless to say, Hawaii went o-fer.
That's right. USC completed their contract with Hawaii last year and will play them again in 2009. I am disappointed in the USC-Illinois matchup. Would rather see Mizzou.

the contract ended after the 2005 season and Hawaii wanted to schedule them before USC played Nebraska this year...USC wanted no part of that team with CB now and will resume in 2009
still cant find article but USC turned down Hawaii this year

Maybe you're referring to this article from ESPN?
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3118572
It appears that Hawaii got screwed by Michigan who opted to play App St. instead (whoops!). Hawaii also scheduled Michigan St., but MSU paid to get out of that game.
Mark Schlabach says USC didn't want to play Hawaii, but I think that's ridiculous because it was widely known that USC wanted to get out of playing Idaho due to the "weak scheduling" argument that often plagues the traditional powers. When SC went searching for a replacement non-conference opponent, nobody wanted to play them either (afterall, they were the pre-season #1 team with a Heisman caliber QB!). I highly doubt Hawaii wanted to have their potentially perfect season spoiled by playing the Trojans (undoubtedly in the Coliseum, where they are like 30-1...ahem Stanford...the past 5-6 years).
GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!

Yes, thats it...Im sure many will say Hawaii got LUCKY because of the teams that pulled out...but JJ has that team ready for battle every week and they REALLY THINK they can stick with anyone in the nation...the sugar bowl will be a very battle tested game for them...
the most prolific pass team in the nation versus the team playing the best ball right now

USC has a tough non-conference schedule next year. They play Ohio State (home), Virginia (away) and Notre Dame (home). They will play these teams opposite venues the following year.

missouri definitely got screwed more than any other team near the top. Basically, beating KU the last game of the season HURT them. Missou only lost to 1 team all year! -- and they don't get to go to a bcs bowl? So ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as OSU getting into the NC...stupid college football

"did you know they tried to schedule Michigan and USC this year? none of em wanted a part of Hawaii"
Good point. That's the problem with the cartel. Once a team from the "outside" gets good (which Hawai'i has been for sometime now), the cartel refuses to play them, thus the argument of the "weakened schedule" kicks in & hurts them in the overall standings. Better get used to it b/c once we get good, (if we get good), it'll happen to us & we'll be the complainers. Don't worry, nothing will happen & the BCS-BS & it will continue on into perptetuity. As long as TV & the BCS-BS is around, we & the rest of the "outsiders" will never be contenders again & the cartel gets stronger & for everyone else, good $%$# luck
Don't expect any leadership from Turner or anyone outside the bubble.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
