Today Is Not The Day

Postby SWC Grey Hair » Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:05 am

Don't panic but today is not the day. The season just ended Saturday and only now can the real face to face discussions begin. I am not sure PJ is going to be the man. For sure several candidates will have face to face interviews with Orsini, et al. Next week is more likely to be when we get our new coach in my opinion.

Don't panic!?

I think this board went past the panic stage a couple of weeks ago. We're at the riot stage it would seem by the number newbie chicken littles.

From Dave Glenn;s WRAL blog--he is a very tied-in NCarolina reporter

"Monday update:

Good news for Duke: Johnson obviously did not get the Nebraska job.

Bad news for Duke: Georgia Tech, and perhaps others, have joined Duke and SMU in scheduling a meeting with Johnson this week.

Also: Grambling coach Rod Broadway, a former Duke assistant and the former head coach at N.C. Central, will speak with the Blue Devils this week about their vacancy. It's not clear where Broadway stands in Duke's pecking order.

Then please explain how it is that Nutt has been offered and accepted the job at Mississippi, Pelini has been offered and accepted the job at Nebraska, etc.? I am confused how this was made to happen without the benefit of face to face discussions.

Arkansas and Ole Miss are programs that can sell themselves through agents. If we are going to get a current successful head coach, Orsini, Turner,Sewell, etc. will have to sell the candidate in person on our committment and respond directly to any concerns.

Nebraska did meet face to face with Pelini. Tom Osborne and the Chancellor of the univeresity flew to Baton Rouge on a booster's private plane last Sunday and interviewed him, then flew to Atlanta where the search firm they used is located and interviewed Turner Gill and Jim Grobe. There are no confirmed reports that Paul Johnson was ever interviewed for that job, just some speculation that he was among the "handfull of candidates" that Osborne talked to.

The Houston Nutt situation was somewhat different. This happened so quickly that it must have occurred only through the search firms and agents before he ever resigned. Remember that he stepped down--they offered him a two year contract extension and he turned them down. So, whether he actually had a face to face interview in Mississippi is unknown--he may have done it months ago, or he may have connections to the athletic director or something and just did it privately. (Which could be a good sign for SMU getting PJ--PJ is friends with Orsini and one of the associate AD's. They all worked together at Navy under the previous coaching staff.)

With all of the reporting that we made an offer to him last week, my guess is that there is something to it. We probably worked out a deal with his agent that will be formally presented when he actually interviews. That does not mean it is a done deal though--looked what happened to Michigan over the weekend when they leaked they were making an offer to Les Miles. Some idiot in their athletic department blew it for them. Hopefully we didn't do the same thing. Although, it looks like he is out at Georgia Tech, and we should be able to outdo Duke unless he just really wants to be in a BCS conference no matter how bad the program is.

If he wanted that though, why wouldn't he have gone after the Baylor job rather than Duke? SMU is a better job though because it is easier to win in CUSA than the ACC. Those failing programs in BCS conferences are nearly impossible to turn around because you can't amass the wins to flip the recruiting draw to your school. Much easier to turn the SMU program around and get the school into a better conference like Patterson did at TCU than to try to turn around a Baylor, Iowa State, Duke, or Vanderbilt.

My guess--PJ or June Jones within the next few days. Turner seems pretty confident we'll have it locked up by Thursday. He wouldn't have made that statement if he didn't have good information that a deal was close. I'll take PJ over June Jones any day though. PJ has a much longer and consistent record of winning and beating better teams. Anyone with a little bit of defense can go undefeated in the WAC--especially when you play the 119th rated schedule out of 119 schools. Georgia will destroy Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

It is so frustrating. We were the first to fire our coach and now we are one of the last to make a hire. I don't buy this excuse that the guy they have, had a game last weekend garbage. A & M knew who they were going to hire well before the UT game, Nutt knew he was leaving ARK. before the third OT against LSU, etc.

You do not have to wait until a team finishes their season to discuss job opportunities with a currently employed coach. It happens every season, Fran's done it several times. I think they lost out on the person they wanted and are now in scramble mode. If Paul Johnson is the person they wanted it should have been a done deal two weeks ago and if they wanted to announce it after the Army game, fine.

Obviously it wasn't done two weeks ago and I can't understand why they would wait until now. Something's not right.

I'd take June Jones over Johnson. Hawaii will kick the Bulldogs' arses.
