Why did Copeland fire Cavan?

Postby PonySnob » Sat Oct 25, 2003 3:12 pm

So far, the only thing that SMU has accomplished with the firing of Cavan is an increase in the salary of the head coach. Why are paying a guy twice as much and having even less delivered?

I guess the great recruiting classes that Bennett has delivered isn't worth anything? I think getting rid of Cavan was the right move. It is just going to take time. It is tough to be patient when you are 0-7 and seem to be getting worse, but I think we will have significantly better days ahead. I think if we just get a coordinator in there we can make the offense a ton better.

Tulsa was god awful when Cavan was around. Even with them being bad, we still just scraped by in most of our encounters.

And now SMU is god awful with Bennett - and we seem to get blown out by just about every team that we play.

Cavan was a decent coach and he had a good staff, but Bennett's 1st recruiting class was as strong as any class Cavan put together in his entire tenure at SMU. Let's see what Bennett can do coming of what's looking like an 0-12 season. There's no question he needs another class as strong as last year's and this team has to show significant improvement NEXT year, or Bennett will lose that job security he thinks he has.

That is bullshi$ Cavan hadto recruit under the toughest conditions in the NCAA. Cavan was putting together a really good class when he was fired. Cavan or(insert any coach) were amd are better coaches than bennett. bennett is a horrible game day coach and a control freak who overrides his DC and his OC. This is the great bennett's coaching that you see every saturday. I was probably the lone distractor last year but I think others especially that are close to the program and see and hear things I don't actually see that bennett is not a good coach. bennett lost to a first year head coach that had less talent than SMU,but they did have one thing that SMU didn't-- A Good Head Coach
