Those that were thereHow did Phillips look? Was he like Ramon? Does he have jets? Tell me what you thought of him.
Re: Those that were thereMuch bigger than Flanigan, and a different kind of runner. I was pretty impressed with the first drive: he showed poise, improvisational skills w/ the ball, and a willingness to deal some punishment before going down (that last part made me nervous). He's quick, though, too--looked pretty elusive rolling out--but the box score indicates the accuracy.
Re: Those that were thereWell, that was a long drive home.
Phillips looked pretty good, but didn't play as much as I would have liked. But he was impressive, at least as a runner. Not quite as fast as Falnigan, but close -- and a LOT stronger. He outran some guys, made several guys miss and frequently dragged guys for 5-10 yards. He's like a fullback with speed. I think PonyFans will enjoy watching him next week.
Re: Those that were thereI was really impressed by his composure-there was no sign of panic which is more than I can say for Wallis who on 6 straight passing plays was couldn't even get off a pass after 2 years in the offense. Seriously in the history of SMU football I've never seen a QB with a worse pocket presence than Wallis-who with the slightest pressure goes into panic mode-with our offensive line pressure is going to happen on just about every play I admit-I've got a pretty good hunch that Phillips can handle the necessary improvisation better than Captain Panic who simply running for his life. Flannigan did too-its "feeling" what to do in those situations which can turn disaster into survival.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Those that were thereI agree, I was not a proponent of pulling Phillips redshirt, but he looked poised and made things happen. His first couple of attempts were full of adrinaline, but at least he saw a receiver and threw it. I easily saw an wide open receivers on more than half of Wallis's attempts, he either has no field vision or no ability to check down.
If Phillips was eligible he should have started the 2nd half and finished the game. Putting him in in mop up is a diservice to the whole team.
Re: Those that were thereI just hope Coach B starts Phillips the rest of the way. Best way to learn is by getting thrown in the deep end - and I get the sense he has the ability to do some serious swimming.
