Pulling for you guys....Let me start by saying I'm not an SMU fan, Georgia Tech fan, or Duke fan.
I am a football fan, and I fan of Paul Johnson. the day Navy hired him I ordered Navy hats, shirts, etc. and if he leaves Navy, I'll probably do the same this go round. When this all started, I was hoping Coach Johnson would either stay at Navy or take the GT job to prove his system works in the BCS conferences like he said it would. However, the GT board is full of fans who would rather lose pretty than win with the triple option. SMU and Duke fans seem to understand that Johnson wins....period. Yes, if he gets the job, he will run the triple option...and he will win. At SMU, he can have the at the top of Conf. USA in 2-3 years, but if you want someone who is going to put the football in the air to please boosters, Johnson's not your guy. If you want someone like Les Miles who gives these goofy, passionate press conferences, he's not your guy. But if you want to win and don't care how it gets done, Johnson's the absolute best at it. Nobody could win a Navy like he's won there (6 CIC trophies...school record). I get tired of people saying they don't want Johnson because they'll "lose 5-star recruits". Who needs them? He's been winning with 0 and 1 star recruits at Navy. So what if the primadonna pocket passer doesn't want to come? How many pocket passers win games by themselves? I'd rather have a team that plays like a TEAM than a team of "all-star" that are more worried about what round they'll go in than what the score is. Those kinds of players can't play for Johnson. He won at Georgia Southern under Erk Russell (85 and 86 National Championships...QB Tracy Ham was as deadly a thrower as a runner), he won at Hawaii under Bob Wagner (Hawaii 9-3 in 88, 9-3-1 in 89, 11-2 in 92), won as head coach at Georgia Southern (National Championships in 1999, 2000, 1999 team averaged 49.8 points per game, including 59 points in the championship game vs. Jim Tressel) and he has won at Navy. I hope SMU gets him, because after reading this board for the last week, I think you guys are hungry for a winning program, and would appreciate the turnaround you would experience. Good luck.
Re: Pulling for you guys....
Hungry for a winner? We're starving...like a Ethiopian famine victim...for a winner.
thanks for the post. i have become a huge paul johnson fan over the last week or so after doing some reading on everything that he has accomplished. he certainly seems like he's willing to do anything to win - even if it's running a non-traditional offense. smu is in desperate need of something to turn things around and a guy who is willing to run any kind of offense necessary to succeed would be huge for us. i really hope we get him.
Thanks, veerbone,
The critical issue for us is our twenty years in the desert. Winning and winning now is important. Johnson will win faster than others, in my opinion. Therefore, SMU needs to develop its own formula for success. Sounds like Paul will figure it out. In the absence of another "strategy", this makes sense. Appeciate your assessment. Pony Up
Re: Pulling for you guys....If "veerbone" knows what he's talking about, that's all I need to see. SAY NO TO JOHNSON!
I don't get that impression from what I've read. At Navy, he uses the triple option because that's what works with the players he has. Given a good passing QB, I think he would adjust his offense to take advantage of it.
I had lunch today with a guy who didn't want the PJ offense for this exact reason – he likes seeing the ball in the air and we have potential through the air with J Willis, Sanders and Robinson.
But on the other hand, as good as Willis' feet are, it makes you wonder what you could get with a combination of triple option mixed with roll out and play action passing. Methinks imposing a little discipline on Willis with designed roll outs and play action passes mixed with the option would give defenses absolute fits. It also might level the playing field against bigger defenses. Could be fun to watch. ![]()
Re: Pulling for you guys....
Completely agree Hoss, I would hate to run the triple option and go to 5 straight bowl games like navy has. I hate winning and that seems to be what PJ does, just wins, makes me sick, him and his winning ways. If he tries to come to our school and make us winners...I'm gonna be pissed! p.s. I still heart sarcasm. p.p.s. nailed it.
If Coach Johnson comes here, he will run some triple option and he will pass also. The team will be fun to watch and would be very well prepared....The real issue is not just offensive improvement but defensive improvement as well. Missed tackles and busted assignments will not be tolerated. No one will be carrying the ball like a loaf of bread downfield.
Re: Pulling for you guys....
That's the understatement of the year. Welcome to the board.
