Penn State Lands $5-Million Endowment for Football Coach
Penn State University is receiving $5-million to endow its head-football-coach position, which Joe Paterno has held for 42 years. The gift, from Patrick and Candace Malloy, was announced five days after Mr. Paterno’s annual salary of $512,664 was revealed, despite a lengthy court challenge by the university.
Income from the Malloy Paterno Head Football Coach Endowment will not be used to raise the salary of Mr. Paterno or his successor. Instead, the endowment, thought to be the first of its kind, will help finance the coach’s expenses, such as for recruiting players.
The endowment will be a draw for coaches vying to replace the 80-year-old Mr. Paterno. Some Penn State fans have speculated that a top-flight successor would ask for much more than his relatively low reported salary.
Mr. Paterno will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame tonight. In a written statement he said the $5-million gift meant as much to him as the induction. “I guess Christmas came early this year,â€

How big of an endowment do you think is appropriate for Johnson? You see where this thread is going, I assume, Pony.

Penn St. should be ashamed of itself. I guess they want him to finally leave and Paterno is too scared to ask for a raise. But come on that is not a market salary. I'd be embarrassed if I was a Penn St. Fan that they have been taking advantage of a Legend like that (even though I hate the little squirrel.)

For a lot of coaches, it's all about the money. But I believe JoePa is different. He's the type who would coach for $1 a year if that was all they offered.

Whatever, what about respecting and rewarding those that have produced results for your institution. He shouldn't even have to ask to receive a market wage-geez he's earning Phil Bennett money.

My guess is that he looks at anything he makes as gravy. He's 80, he probably has millions socked away, is getting to do what he loves doing and MAKES A HALF MILLION PER.
