Serious Question

Postby PonyKai » Wed Dec 05, 2007 12:50 am

If we secure the services of Mr. Johnson, and out-play both Duke, Georgia Tech and any offer Navy makes, what kind of statement does it make to the college football world? Looking for some thoughts here.

It probably tells the college football world that Georgia Tech wasn't really interested in PJ.

That we may not be able to buy our players any more, but we sure as hell can buy our coach!

Quote I saw on an Alabama board last week after the PJ story broke: "If they are able to get a coach like Paul Johnson, it will be the greatest hire SMU has made since Erik Dickerson and Craig James."

To use a quote from Yamamoto, "I am afraid we have awakend a sleeping giant and instilled him with a terrible resolve." (apologies to Samuri Stang)

I have always said that if this university wants to do it we can. If we get a great x & o coach with the restrictions yanked, we can leave TCUseless and most other private institutions in the dust.

Looks to me like Mr. Ford et.al., told Orsini that whatever it takes... fix it.

That S.M.U. is still relevant in the college football world. I think one of the best things we have going for us in the bidding war for Johnson is that all of these other schools don't take S.M.U. seriously. Have you seen the posts on the other schools' boards talking about S.M.U. being a "career killer" or "a lateral move at best or even a step back"? The Navy folks have been shocked into reality by the fact that PJ actually travelled to Dallas to entertain an offer from S.M.U.

Some years ago, when Jerry Jones secretly flew to NJ to meet with Bill Parcells about the Cowboys job, Tony Kornheiser wrote a column about Bill Parcells' instinct for selecting the right job (Giants, Pats, Jets). Dallas was 5-11 the previous year and appeared years away from the playoffs, and no one thought Dallas was a good job for someone at Parcells stage of his career. But Parcells saw something others didn't. PJ sees something that the Navy, GT & Duke boosters don't...and it has them rather uneasy.

That SMU is willing to pay a premium to obtain a good coach that will run a CLEAN program.

That SMU is AGAIN relevant in the college football world. There is no reason we can't be great again. None at all. We may be a "small private school"... but we have a lot of dollars backing us, we have a gorgeous stadium, we're in a great city, and that great city (my Austin brethren will disagree with me on that first point but no one can disagree on the latter) loves a winner. All we have to do is deliver a winner. People will come. The BCS - if it hasn't fallen - will come.

Look at USF... where did they come form? Out of nowhere. SMU still has a chance... a huge chance. And THAT is why Orsini is here, and THAT is what he is selling to our prospective coaches.

Hiring Johnson says "We want to win"

Hiring Bowden or Neuheisel says "We want a big name"

I agree veerbone. Johnson to me means we want a solid coach that can really build a program making it competitive against anyone we play. The other names, which I admit are much more flashy, just don't appeal to me for the long haul. I get a better feel for an overall better football team with Johnson. Gosh it would be nice to have a "Big Johnson."
