...that Georgia Tech can get $1.5 million AT THE MOST....

What has SMU offered as a bottom line?

i have no "inside info" or anything, but all reports are $10-12MM...in that case i see a 5 yr deal at 2MM a year for the HC, with the other 2MM going to asst coaches.

Surely we can pony up more than that... the tuition from the kids in this lab is more than that...

The 10-12 mil is the amount of new donations we got. Anyone know if that was cold hard cash, or just pledges to give so much per year?

That would make a big difference. Plus if they have the cash on hand, they can invest the remaining money for the rest of the contract and it will be worth a decent amount more.

Regardless, I'm sure that we probably don't have a real bottom line--just a point at which a bidding war became ridiculous. If they go over by a half mil, the boosters will shell out the cash. The contract is being booster driven--not university driven--so, I imagine they can come up with whatever they need. I'd even throw in a few bucks!

That's what happens when you shoot your wad buying out a coach:

Frans' buyout kept them from getting a better coach
now...if what you are saying is true...

Chan's buyout will keep them from getting PJ

I think that I read Chan's buyout was $6 mil. Could be wrong about that, but that's a lot. I have a little trouble believing that though, especially if he was only making 1.1 to start with. That may just be what he had left on his contract. I thought Charlie Weis was the only coach that didn't have a standard buyout clause--and at this point, he would only be owed $8 mil on his $10 mil contract.

Bill Callahan's contract had 8 mil remaining, but his buyout was only 3 mil. A&M didn't have to pay Fran his entire buyout though. Bill Byrne used his NCAA rule violations with the newsletter to get him negotiated down and avoid a court battle.

The chatter over at stingtalk though is that they can't compete and the administration/faculty are interfering. Hope it's true!

No commingling of funds. The athletic department doesn't have any money. the money for the coach (the $12MM+/-) has been raised (committed) by a group of 15 individuals.

there's not just a pile of money sitting around. SMU is a very wealthy University, our endowment is huge (TWSS). But that money is for specific uses.

the primary disadvantage we have over a school like baylor is that they will receive a piece of the BCS pie that OU and Kansas will get for going to a BCS bowl.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
