So now after 20 years SMU wants to get back in the football business. Heartening to know that I was just wasting my time for these last 20 years. I wish someone had told me before now.

Now that we are back in the football business. I find it amusing that we are having to crawl on our hands and knees to get a coach. I guess that 's what 20 years of neglect gets you.

Keeping a coach around here (and acutally extending his contract) after a winless season should have told you SMU was not in the football business.

Other than PJ and Mason every former HC out there has baggage as far as I can tell. If PJ falls through we are probably on to Mason or an assistant imho.

Whether it is $2M or $3M, it is a negative ROI or poor investment until SMU is committed to bringing in top talent. Will a new coach generate more revenue for the school under current conditions, admissions, courses offered, etc..? Even if we go 8-4, will that improve revenue generation by all that much and could we go 8-4 with another coach we didn't have to pay as much?

I don't think a high profile coach is the answer to this equation. There is no guarentee that Johnson or any other coach can take the level of talent we have and turn them into winners.

I would just as soon higher a good coordinator from a reputable program. Johnson or anyone else will use this as a stepping stone to a bigger and better deal. There is always someone willing to offer more.

Ask most KU fans if Mason has baggage. The hatchet job he did on them when he left was awful, and severely hampered their recruiting for awhile. He took the UGA job, then declined it a couple of days later, and agreed to come back to KU. He then did absolutely no recruiting during the following year, and left for Minnesota as soon as the opportunity presented itself. In addition to the leaving the pantry bare, it dumped the carcass of Terry Allen on the Jayhawks as the new head coach.
