Turning the corner

Postby mrydel » Mon Oct 27, 2003 1:06 pm

Whether with or without Bennett, with or without Copeland, or with or without Turner, you will know that SMU has turned the corner when a statement can be made about the football team without ending it with "since the death penalty".

i.e Worst season "since the death penalty".
First winning season "since the death penalty".
Largest or smallest crowd "since the death penalty.

I am truly hoping that as this program turns the corner we can establish a strong enough tradition that we will not have to be compared to an era before the death penalty but rather compared to all SMU teams in our proud history of football. That is why I am hoping that Bennett's plan is one of program building for the long haul and not just one to win some games quickly. I am keeping my faith in him for the time being and do believe that we will see serious progress in the next 2 years.

myrdel:

You might not get many to agree with your point of view, but I applaud your attitude. I look at Joe Novak at Northern Illinois, who suffered through his first three years with only a couple of wins before turning the corner the last three. Apparently adminstration and the fans gave him what he needed, e.g. time, commitment, support, etc.

Some posts suggest we nuke Bennett, Copeland, Turner, the Board of Trustees, assistants, Peruna, the Band, Mother Teresa, ........

Last time I checked, we are not entitled to anything; :thumbupcool: we have to earn it. I hit the reset button when Phil came on board. One and half seasons doesn't mean much in the whole scheme of things. Hope and progress by the end of next year should be visible. Until then, we don't have the luxury of shooting from the hip.

As for me, I'll be at the Fresno game expecting progress and wanting a win. Go Ponies.

Well said, both of you. I also believe Coach Bennett will get it turned around, and will buy my season tickets for next year as soon as I can.
