Tim, DMS should fire you on the spot. To say that a potential candidate would be a fool for taking an SMU job, possibly influencing his decision is a disgrace to DMS and their relationship to the Dallas community. In my opinion, your sense of propriety is shot and any SMU friend or alum should jerk their DMS support. If you have negative opinions regarding the school's academic, athletic or political stances, your journalistic position gives you the right to take a stance. But, if you are making statements of personal opinion that could affect decisions regarding employment choices for a Dallas institution, expect ramifications. DMS is here partly to support Dallas and its people. I would never ask you to lie or falsely report, but this blog entry is irresponsible.

agreed. i think it just shows that he does not want SMU to succeed
we'd all like to think Orsini was going to make a "splash" hire and steal some highly coveted candidate away from a BCS program...but...have you guys been paying attention to what is happening out there in the big boy coaching market?
The BCS is all about the "haves and the have nots" and in case you haven't noticed, we are in the latter category.
If our daddy warbucks group wants to pony up about $3 mil for the HC and another $2mil for his staff, we just might put together a staff that could really make an immediate difference around here.
REALITY is that if Johnson is an ambitious guy and aspires to compete for national championships (he's enjoyed a couple of those at I-AA), this comment was dead on...that he'd be crazy to settle for SMU if he has an opportunity to go to Ga Tech, where he would at least have a chance to compete for the BCS Championship. At SMU, he could have back to back undefeated seasons and all he would see is that "token" seeding in a BCS bowl...not a shot at the National Championship.
I don't expect everyone to be happy about it, but let's deal with our reality, O.K.?
I will stand behind this post...can't blame Johnson for his decision. Wise man. He's a hot commodity riht now and took the best available option to see if he can succeed at the highest level of college ball.
Now...let's get back to dealing with our reality. We apparently have an administration that will shy away from anyone the least bit "controversial" in this search. That probably means no Fran, no Bowden, no Barnett, no Neuheisel, etc...
Where does that leave us? Take a shot at another hot prospect, upcoming Coordinator...or a proven head coach looking to move up a peg. That means looking at Turner Gill or into the I-AA ranks. Any "splash" hire is unlikely at this point...but that doesn't mean we can't get a good head coach...and save Mr. Ford some $$$ that we would need if everyone comes trying to hire our new coach away just as soon as he is successful.
This thread is proof, once again, that "the truth hurts." McMahon isn't talking bad about SMU. He's just stating the facts. Any coach with any ambition would choose a school in a BCS conference over one that isn't. That's just the way it is these days. Fran would be a good hire, but good luck if he brings Dickey along.
