I'm sure that there were more than a few people on this board that thought Ritter was awful and we were better off without him on the basketball team for the last couple of years. Amazing how good he looks tonight after a really solid game! I believe it will come together for Harp as the year progresses and he gets more minutes to play.
I'm not saying Harp is anything to write home about, and he very well could be lost. That said, 'creating your own shot' isn't a prerequisite to be a quality baller, if you have other skills to compensate. You should know, several kids on Dook couldn't get a shot off, if not for screens and picks. Harp just needs to relax and get used to the speed of the game. We may need to generate a look or two for the kid, to get his confidence up. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Your boy JJ couldn't create his own shot...Now we are seeing the effects in the NBA...Still a great spot up shooter though...
paulus was a top 50 recruit in hoops an football, of course their were expectations. Just use harp like K uses Taylor King, who can't create either, but can shoot. Run him off screens, rub his defender, and launch “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Not on here to start a Duke debate....
JJ made his own shot..period. Taylor King creates his own shot too...problem is, he creates his shot from shooting from half-court after one pass. He will get better though and learn (freshmen mistakes) to look for another player with a better shot. I hope Harp can develop into something, but right now he is lost. DBB
I don't think you know what creating your own shot is. I watched King 50 + times in high school, at shoe camps, and AAU. Kid can't create any space off the bounce, none. He's a catch and release specialist. Same w/JJ until his senior year where he became a capable driver, but nothing special. Players like this need manufactured looks, you don't iso them. That's all I'm saying w/Harp. If he's a marksman, get him looks where is comfortable by design “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Beat me to it...Agree 100%
Harp is a hustler. he may not be pretty out there, but when he's in the game, he makes a difference. he gets into the play and gets in the way. not a box score guy, but a difference maker. he'll be good over his career as he develops into his roll
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
You are both idiots. Re-read what I wrote. I was actually "making fun" of Taylor and clearly saying he was NOT creating his own shot. Notice I said he shoots from half-court..hence "creating" his own shot as nobody would guard him from that far away.
Harp Will Be FineHe is inconsistent right now - He had a double double about a week ago
and looked like he was getting his confidence up. He is a tough kid. If you ever go to a practice you will see how hard he plays. He doesn't back down from anyone and will dive for loose balls and try for offensive rebounds. My prediction is that he will turn into a very good div1 player.
Re: Harp Will Be Fine
I trust that Doh put him into the game for a good reason. I was upset about the turnovers that seemed to keep happening when he would get the ball. It didn't help that at least one of those times was a pass that he received while being covered by two guys. He's a little rough around the edges, but I think that he'll develop well. "He was quoting the Bible, Revelations. 'Behold the pale horse.' The man who 'sat on him was Death... and Hell followed with him.'"
"You tell 'em I'm coming... and hell's coming with me!"
Also remember this is a kid that was offered by Bobby Knight, Skip Prosper, Trent Johnson, and our own guy Matt Doherty. I am inclined to think he will end up being a very solid player for us. He has struggled a bit to start but he does bust his tail all over the floor, which is very apparent to anyone watching the games. He will come around.
If he just ends up being a spot up shooter like Scott Johnson, I will be happy. I think he is another one who will get better every game. Not everyone adjusts to the college game at the same rate and he does show potential.

doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
He's lost, he panics, he's shellshocked. He'll be alright, he's what, 7 games or so into his freshman year? DBB says that's irrelevant. If it's irrelevant, does that mean DBB doesn't expect any improvement? He'll improve a lot and we'll be happy with him. He's not as far along as I'd like but he'll be fine. He'll be a good spot up shooter. Some athleticism, never going to a really athletic D1 bball player. I'm guessing he'll be like Chad Allen who was a great shooter and could do other things fairly well. BTW, what were your original expectations? Maybe they were overblown.
Lastly, we know parents look at PFans. I'm not saying I think he'll improve because his parents might be looking but you might want to couch what you say with some sensitivity while still getting your point across.
