Report: SMU target Johnson talks to Ga. Tech

SMU candidate has second interview with Yellow Jackets

Navy football coach Paul Johnson was in Atlanta on Wednesday to interview with Georgia Tech for the second time, according to multiple media reports.

If Johnson is hired at Georgia Tech, it could force SMU athletic director Steve Orsini to move on to Plan B. SMU has been looking for a coach since firing Phil Bennett on Oct. 28.

Johnson visited SMU on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the school's coaching search. But it was just one stop in a busy tour for the in-demand coach.

According to various media reports, Johnson first met with Georgia Tech on Sunday and with Duke officials Monday before traveling to Dallas.

Georgia Tech, which plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference, is an established football program. The school reportedly gave Chan Gailey, who was fired despite six winning seasons, a $4 million buyout.

Johnson makes $1.5 million annually at Navy. Orsini, who has said he is aiming high, has raised about $10 million for SMU's new football coach from boosters.

As hush-hush as this has been kept, her quiet isn't totally unexpected. She obviously isn't going to quote this board, and if the boosters, etc., aren't telling her anything, what can she write? "There's a rumor that SMU is after PJ"? Of course not. She has to verify everything with sources more credible than large purple mammals.

And beyond that... I have a strong inclination to believe that there is another explanation.... what if S.O. is keeping her completely in the loop, with the promise of her compliance so she can have one hell of a story ready when the news breaks.... by her.

I guess that's me hoping that might be the case. Then again, Steve-O's a showmen and the DMN is still a nationally respected newspaper. An inner circle blow-by-blow account would be amazing.

Then again, maybe's she's just like most of SMU's beat writers we've had recently - constantly feeling like they got the shaft with the SMU beat.

Anyhow, I have been pleased with Kate... up until the last few weeks. Seriously, unless she has an ace up her sleeve.. there is ABSOLUTELY no reason she shouldn't have been all over this stuff, even if only in the blogs.

She may not. She probably is paid in free SMU tickets, coupons and Krispy Kremes.

I'm betting on this too...or that Decherd has been threatened within an inch of his life not to leak anything, so Kate's hands are tied.

Not a good time to be going after Decherd. His wife was hit by a car last week, and her condition is touch and go.
