What I know

Postby biggin » Thu Dec 06, 2007 4:12 pm

All I know after speaking to my SMU connection - Paul Johnson has been offered the job. Don't know the terms. As of 12:00 p.m. the athletic department had not been informed of a decision by Johnson one way or the other.

I am still waiting on a call back from my source somewhat familiar with the GT situation.

EDIT: Oh, and Gill is out.

Steve Orsini was just spotted outside of HTSC. Read into it what you will.

GT Source says - "Its anyone's guess." Interesting.

My personal view - not be a "doom and gloomer" - but I think if Johnson was going to take the SMU job he would have taken it already. I was told he had the offer on Tuesday. That doesn't bode will for SMU in my opinion.

I think he either goes to GT or stays at Navy. I was told earlier that Orsini was also courting Turner Gill and Chan Gailey. Looks like Gailey could be up next but I did not discuss this with my SMU connection.

Gailey is not my idea of a WOW.

Good lord Chan Gailey is a huge joke in Dallas! I'd much, much rather have Fran.

Chan Gailey is such a non-WOW hire, he's a -WOW.

Maybe its his call and doesn't want to be here? I have said from the beginning I don't think he ends up the guy and I still don't. Especially if the money is substantially higher now then anticipated it would be foolish to go this route. I think we will know tomorrow.

I don't know. I too can't see Orsini hiring the very guy that was fired by the school who beat SMU out of Johnson. Could be that Gailey is in Orsini's back pocket in case he needs a parachute. Bottom line right now -who knows?

if Johnson says no, why not go after Gill. Within a reasonable budget, SMU can offer him a nice raise and why not an incentive laden deal? He will at least bring more Head Coaching experience than Bennett did when he was hired.

Gill has flat out said he is not leaving Buffalo. The only job he was interested in was Nebraska. Said he had previously been contacted by one other school, but did not interview--most information indicates he was speaking about SMU--and it has been rumored that he declined to interview with us.

Fran and Gailey are not jokes in my mind. Look at both of their coaching records at their previous stops. How can you argue with their past successes? They probably look at SMU as a joke since SMU has sucked the last 20 years. Gailey v. Bennett, Fran v. Bennett....both are upgrades and both have won at the Division 1-A level. Wish we could say that about are previous coaches.

I'm with you BJ, I think that the real problem here is that we built up our expectations on this "WOW" factor. It seemed that we were "promised" WOW, and damnit, we want WOW.

We'll be getting a significant upgrade no matter how it shakes out.
