Turner Gill says he is staying at Buffalo for the forseeable future. Sounds like for him it was pretty much the Nebraska job or nothing, but he will consider a big name school in the future. He says he was contacted by one other program--can only assume SMU, since the only other school that has thrown his name around was WSU and that job wasn't open yet--and he did not interview. That sounds consistent with the rumors that he turned down an interview with us.

He is currently one of the lowest paid coaches in D-1 at 190k a year, and we can't get him interested in the job with the money raised? And he is from the Metroplex? If true, thats sad. Maybe he knows too much about us.

Also, the SMU inquiry was probably before the Nebraska job was offered to Pelini. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd reconsider if we quadrupled his salary so he could come "home" to the Metroplex

Could be. But he also coached here as an assistant in the early 90's before Osborne brought him back to NU. Maybe he had some bad experiences with the admin that we don't know about, but my guess is that Osborne told him it would be a risky move for his career--they talk on a weekly basis.

He has a good thing going where he is with a loyal fan-base that wants him to stay and was just the runner-up for the Nebraska job. I would say if he sticks it out there for two more years and keeps improving their record, he goes big time after that. SMU would be starting back at square one building a program--3-5 years--with no guarantee of success. Better to stick with the people you have recruited already and an energized fan-base than upend things and move into a recruiting fiasco down here. It might be the last $10 million he ever makes! (Hmmmm.....that doesn't sound so bad though, now that I think about it!)

Gill has basically all of the ingredients to be big at Smu, the only thing he does not have is a long tenure as a D-1 head coach for everyone to point to. But he is a D-1 head coach and the coach of the year in a conference at or about CUSA level. Who wants some old man here anyway? Go for a young guy with energy, thats what this job is gonna take.

Because he already has the ball rolling at Bufallo and has a team of his own recruits, and the MAC is an easier conference (even if only marginally) so it is easier to rack up some quick wins and establish a winning coaching record.

Seriously, do you think he has a better chance of making it to a bowl game within the next two years with what he has already established at Buffalo or starting over at SMU?

Apparently his allegiance to Buffalo is twofold:

• BU gave him his first head coaching gig
• He has a daughter who is in high school — junior year, I believe. He has said he wants to stay there until she graduates ... unless Nebraska calls.

Gill sounds like a stud. At least he just said no and is not jerking us around like Johnson did. Gill probably could have engineered a big raise by playing SMU like PJ did. Johnson was never coming here and most of the people who believed hook, line and sinker that he was are also the ones who dismiss Gill. SMU would be lucky to get Gill.

First thing, I don't think Tom Osbourn would say that about any University. He is not that kind of man. Turner Gil is like many coaches in D1 football. The word is out on SMU. What the word is, I don't know, but I got a feeling. I agree with you Stallion, Gil would have a great opportunity here to do some great things. What is the problem?
