Blog, I read your article. Good stuff. If we start bringing in guys to interview, then we know for certain that there was no plan b.

PJ was the one guy that Orsini and Turner agreed on. That's why they went so hard after him (IMHO). My take is that Turner will want to go the PC or "safe" route while Orsini wants to take a risk. Thus they will have to interview several candidates to see if the two can agree. This is where the money guys need to call Turner and say get out of the way and let Steve do his job.

- We fired Bennett early so we could raise funds and therefore know what we could spend (you might have heard we have $10+ million)

- While people were contacted, real negotiations could not start until after the season.

.

Waiting until the season ended is exactly why we're in this situation. Do you think for one second A$M waited until the aggies finished sawing Varsity's horns off to get a deal prepared for Sherman? Not hardly. They knew well before the end of the season what they were going to do and thats the way it should be done. How long did Baylor take to snag Briles? Not 5-6 weeks and we're offering more money.

:x

Big difference with TAMU. Noone was after Sherman. They could have waited until February to hire him and he'd have still been there. We went after a coach that everyone wanted - and we have learned now that we aren't ready to run with the big boys. We'll get there, but we aren't there yet.

Disagree.

We and the rest of the nation learned that we ARE ready to run with the big boys.
As I recall, both Johnson and his wife came to Dallas, and we made a direct impact on Johnson's market value.

We also learned that Johnson chose to go somewhere else, as we have seen happen to a lot bigger programs than ours.

Because it has been so long since SMU has gone after a credible coach, some people are learning that we are competing with others for these coaches. Orsini knows this. He has others.

If we were really ready he would not have taken less money to go somewhere else. When is the last time you heard of that happening. Listen, I'm happy with Orisini. I think he's putting everyone in the country on notice - in a very loud way - that we aren't going to be everyone's fire hydrant anymore. And I'm pumped about that. I just think that right now we aren't quite ready for the bright lights. We need a coach to come in an bring back some respectability first. We are ranked about 117 out of 119. If we had been a top 50 program, we could have had almost any coach we wanted if we were willing to pay that kind of money. We'll get there, I just don't think we are there yet.

I can't make that statement based on ONE highly recruited coach taking another job vs. SMU.

Even if we landed PJ, we all know there are no guarantees.

There is a higher percentage of college and NFL coaching hires that were going to be the ones to turn it around that failed vs. made it happen.
