What about Ed-O as the next coach to work for Steve-O?

He didn't win (10-25) in the toughest conference in the country, but he was exceedingly highly thought of as an assistant at Miami (coached eight All-America players and was revered by many as "the architect" of an outstanding UM defense) and was named National Recruiter of the Year in 2004, which prompted the University of Mississippi to hire him after the school's firing of David Cutcliffe.

Personally, I'm mixed on this. If nothing else, he'd get a ton of talent from Texas/Louisiana to come to the Hilltop.

I think he has a "past." Seem to remember some discussion of a DUI or something like that before he got to Ole Miss.

I can overlook that. If he can coach and recruit, I'll buy his first beer in Dallas and get him a cab ride home.

I'll even front his $5 entry fee in croquet coach Rick Neuheisel's NCAA pool.

I don't disagree, but any "past" disqualifies him for Turner.

I seriously doubt that a DUI would count as a past. Turner means a past with regard to running a football program--NCAA violations/investigations, personal conduct on the job, etc. that would a) affect donor relations, b) raise NCAA eyebrows that SMU and someone they have investigated are in bed together, or c) lead one to believe they could have further problems in the future. Don't think a DUI fits that. LOTS of people have DUI's! Shoot, as a doctor you have to get three before they even consider suspending your license!

If this is really the criteria, then T. Bowden shouldn't be a problem. He was just screwing somebody he shouldn't have been.

The players HATED the Big O at Ole [deleted], absolutely NO FUN to play for. Terrible with the media and fans, poor speaker and cocktail circuit skills....he would be a square peg in a round hole at SMU....all hat, no cattle type guy, an if Phils' game day skills frustrated you, O would drive you to drink....No Way, surprised he is even being mentioned. Back to the drain pipes..!!

So Ol' Miss hires a new head coach. An assistant. Defensive genius. Great recruiter. Can't win games as a head coach. Ol' Miss fires him and you want SMU to consider him?

No thanks.

Been there.

Done that.

Talk to an Ole Miss fan

Postby max the wonder dog » Sat Dec 08, 2007 8:49 am

I registered on this board to respond to this post.

I work with hardcore Ole Miss fans, the kind with condos in Oxford and a tent in The Grove. They HATED Coach O. Friends who attended the Egg Bowl told me everyone left happy -- Miss State fans because they won, Ole Miss fans because they would be rid of Orgeron at last.

His recruiting classes looked good on paper, but a number of recruits never showed up on campus and, if they did, didn't stay. Seems he went after recruits with "issues." Try that at SMU.

Before the Miss State game, 20 players were put on probation for stealing clock radios and pillows(?) from hotels.

And Ditto to comments on his public speaking skills, he doesn't have any.

I still laugh when I read in the Memphis Comical Appeal that Ole Miss has troubles getting reruits to qualify down there...what does it take to get in at Ole Miss? a face? pulse? Long Live Showboat Boykin.

I've heard from an Ole Miss buddy of mine that Orgeron bordered on schizophrenic...REALLY weird, huge mood swings, very erratic, unstable.
