The Paul Johnson Situation

Postby PonyKai » Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:01 am

Cut me a little slack..it's late and I've been out having a pretty good time. Bet let's just re-asses this whole situation here...

-Mr. Orsini was not played by Mr. Johnson. He went after a high profile, in-commodity target and up against several BCS schools. He went all out, knowing this was a very tough sell, and did it all right, and eventually lost out to a BCS school that in the end paid around 18$ million for their coach,

-There are other irons in the fire. No idea who or what or when, but you don't become even a moderately successful businessman by doing something unintelligent like putting all your eggs in one basket.

-10-12$ million doesn't buy you Greg Davis.

-It is good that SMU has received publicity along the lines of getting serious about CFB again, and stating that they will do everything possible to help the next coach WIN here at SMU.

-There's a reason Terry Bowden hasn't been such a hot commodity. I don't know what it is and I think he will be a very good coach once again, but it's very odd to see such relative silence with his name.

-10-12 million will buy you good assistant coaches. This was one of Mr. Bennett's downfalls. While there is no one thing to point to, and certainly there were good coaches on this staff, a head coach with a well-paid and respectable staff will aid in a football team succeeding.

-This is the centerpiece to Mr. Orsini's career. Place your bets on the candidates that will be most likely to succeed here.

-Georgia Tech simply came back and offered more money that us. Didn't fall apart at the 11th hour, or something like that. I personally believe it's crap, but good PR for him to say it's a match made in heaven and I wouldn't leave for anything but (something like) Georgia Tech.

-SMU would have beaten out Navy for his services.

-Again, there is significant interest in this job. Whether that matriculates into someone on the podium holding up a jersey, that is a whole other ballgame, but there has been interest in this job.

-I believe the next coach will succeed here even if it isn't Urban Meyer, Jesus Christ, or Pete Carroll. I think things will change internally for the better here in the months to come.

-We will get a decent coach in here.

There ya go...too long and prolly too boring, but that's pretty durn good typing for this late after a Friday. Feel free to tear me a new one!

The new coach will be better than decent. He'll be good.

Agreed - maybe very good.

In fact, I'll go so far as to predict that in two years we'll be saying "do you remember when PonyFans were getting pissed that we missed out on Paul Johnson?"

Go get 'em, Steve-O!
