TCU foo's ain't perfect...

Postby MizterTea » Wed Oct 29, 2003 5:17 pm

I guess one reason they don't care about the MWC travel... is cause some organizations don't care

Word down here in H-town says that desipte the tcu fans outnumbering Cougar fans at the game, the horny toad band did NOT make the trip to Houston

I would hope that if (or when) the Mustangs get in the top 25 & start playing in CUSA - I would expect yearly roadies from the Mustang Band to support the team.

(and tcu flamers don't talk that jibba jabba about the weather... cuz the Mustang Band came to the 2000 rice dibacle in the rain and those tcu band suckas didn't come in 2001 either)

and people want to point fingers at SMU ...

on the same day we played a game about as close in Tulsa-there was no band and about 30-40 SMU fans not related to football players. What did TCU have?

I never said SMU was perfect - but you better be damn sure that if we were 8-0 and going on a 3.5 hour road trip and the Band did not attend - there would be hell to pay for dim suckas

tcu had a good crowd, but after winning a very exciting game against an in-state rival - the fans had to sing the alma mater without music (I think one of the coaches lead it or something to that effect)

...besides - my sources say that the tcu band blows their travel money playing band exhibitions on off weekends so they can't travel to local games - which IF TRUE - makes it almost criminal for them not to make this trip (I would have mentioned that beofre, but I don't want to put unsubstantiated rumors all over this board)

Your "unsubstantiated rumor" appears to be fact according this link. This weekend, they have to go play for the people at Bands of America down in San Antonio. I guess they feel more compelled to share their lame music and marching with a bunch of High Schoolers rather than go the weekend before to Houston and support their team. Amazing.

I have a connection (closer than I'd like to admit) in the TCU band. Here's the deal:

-Yes, they opted to use their budget to go to Bands of America (mainly a high school exhibition/contest) this weekend rather than the UofH game last weekend. Rest assured the Mustang Band would not have chosen that path.

-The Mustang Band is travelling to 3 games (TX Tech, Baylor, La Tech) this year, which is the most they have been to in quite a while. Budgetary constraints kept them from making an official trip to Tulsa.

-Band members were planning to make a trip to Tulsa on their own dime as a pep band, but the TU people would not agree to let them play without a director. (Actually, after seeing the TU band I think it was so they didn't get embarassed :thumbupcool: )

-Several years ago when we played at Houston, the band did not make an official trip. They could only afford one trip that year, and they chose the Rice game. A student pep band did travel to the UofH game and made a lot of noise.

So rest assured, there would have been some sort of SMU band there, officially or unofficially.

Bands have gotten into this dilemma in recent years and it's hard to argue both sides. Some say marching band is now a standalone artform and should be able to go to competitions (TCU goes only to exhibit though, hmmm) while others argue that the band exists primarily to support the football team and fans. In college, I definitely think the latter is the correct choice. High school band can be standalone because it gives kids something to learn, to do, to perfect. It allows kids to find a talent they may not know they had and then compete with it and see how they stack up against other schools. In college however, everyone in band already went through all that crap for the last 4 years, why continue it now. Sign up to play for the football games, reason number 1. TCU says they play these high school competitions to help recruit. They could recruit 500 of the best musicians next week, but what does it help if they didn't even go to a game 4 hours away.

Some TCU band member was actually complaining that they don't like giving up their holiday breaks to go to bowl games. Boo frickety hoo. What I wouldn't give to go to a bowl game instead of sitting home watching them on TV, and hearing from my band friends at UF and FSU how fun it was. Sounds like TCU is recruiting the wrong type of band members. They need kids that are spirited and can play decently, recruitment will follow after those two are in place. Why recruit if you get a bunch of whiners that don't want to go to football games in the first place?

Wow...criticizing our or any other school's band recruiting? That has to be a sad first in the history of college sports message boards.

If you know anyone from the TCU band, you know that they are there mostly to fill a requirement. My friend only did it for two years because he was a decent marcher and it finished his ensemble credit.

PS, TCUPunter is a [deleted]. You can read his high and mighty, uneducated rantings on www.killerfrogs.com but I think your time would be better spent trimming your nose hairs or shoveling Peruna ****.

Hey sucka - the original critcism was not about the band recruiting but it was more that your "spirit organization" was spending its money to go around the state like a high school band instead of going to a BIG LOCAL CONFERENCE GAME AND SUPPORTING THEIR TEAM.

It seems to me that the Mustang Band can travel to Houston (even though we haven't beaten Rice here since the 80's)

I mean - the UH buddies said that your POM POM girls showed up and you FOOTBALL COACH DIRECTED THE ALMA MATER... IF SMU WAS IN THE FORTUNATE POSITION OF TCU AND THIS HAPPENED, THE CALLS AND LETTERS WOULD BE FLYING TO THE SCHOOL AND THE BAND !!!

Fire the band director!!!!!!!!How many competitions has he won lately? This is important stuff!! I also heard one of the B School deans wasn't published last year. Fire him! Clean house, fire everyone. Fire Turner, Fire Copeland, Fire Bennett, Fire Dement, Fire Rhonda. Let's fire Jerry Ford too. He hasn't done anything for a couple of years. This board gets sillier all the time. If we had any, we should fire the fans too. Have you guys left anyone out?

You high and mighty ****face, I can't wait til one day your program is in the ****ter again. Enjoy it while it lasts, [deleted].

Actually I have been enjoying it the past 6 years and with the young talent and good coaching we have, it'll looks looks like another 6 years of bowl games and Top 25 rankings.
