Jerry Moore has won the last two DivII championships and is poised to win another this year. the worst he has ever finished in that conference is 4th
It's 1-AA (or FCS now), not Division II. Sorry, it's hard enough to get any respect at our level without being compared to Division II schools.
Eagle01: I already brought Jerry Moore's name up earlier today (see thread "Jerry Moore" in the Football Forum)...don't bother discussing him any further here...it'll just frustrate you.

I wasn't suggesting Moore, but perhaps another 1-AA coach with a proven track record (the Montana coach and Delaware coach come to mind . . . The Georgia Southern coach has only been there one year, you don't want him! ).
I really hope you land someone good. I'm going to adopt you guys as my 1-A team for next year.

It sounds like Colorado State didn't even want the Montana coach....or he even turned down Colorado State. Probably not going to happen.

Plus, I don't think we're dipping that low yet....if it is true we're bringing in these four people, we're still aiming quite a bit higher than that.

Hey, Eagle01, how about we hire Chris Hatcher? He is an offensive genius.
Ummm, no he's not. Nothing to see there. Move along. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Seriously, if he leaves, we'd be on our fourth coach in four years. There'd be riots in the streets (ok, anger posted on message boards) if that were to happen. He spoke to GT officials for about 30 minutes over the phone about their job and you'd have thought the world was coming to an end at Georgia Southern.
Eagle, who was the guy at Ga Southern during their first run of 1-AA championships? A tough, old bald guy as I recall.

That would be Erskine 'Erk' Russell, nicknamed 'The Bald Eagle' because of his bald head and the school's mascot.
Russell averaged 10.4 wins per season. He entered the 1989 season as America's winningest coach, orchestrator of two national championships, 68 wins and 14 All-America selections -- all during a seven-year period. In the ensuing 105 days, Georgia Southern ascended to the top spot in the NCAA I-AA football poll and Russell smoked 15 victory cigars. The Eagles extended Division I's longest home win streak from 26 to 37 games, en route to gaining distinction as the only 15-0 college team of the twentieth century. Russell's final record at Georgia Southern, after his retirement in 1989, was 83-22-1 (.788). During the Mike Sewak Era, Russell unfortunately cut ties with GSU after his son Rusty was fired from the coaching staff. In 2006, with the hire of new Head Coach Brian VanGorder, he was reunited with the program. He addressed the team the night before his shocking and sudden death on September 8, 2006. Georgia Southern University and thousands of friends, family, and fans gathered at Paulson Stadium to mourn the passing of Erk Russell, one of America's most exciting and successful college football coaches. The cause of death was a stroke while pulling out of a gas station on the west side of Statesboro. He was 80.

It also warrants mentioning that Erk Russell resurrected the football program at Georgia Southern in 1981, leaving the University of Georgia after their national championship of 1980. The school had to go to Kmart to buy a football for him to hold during the initial press conference.
I won't bother you with other details (this is an SMU board, not a Georgia Southern board), but Erk was royalty in Statesboro. A bronze bust of him was put at the endzone near the Eagles lockerroom and the players either rub his head or headbutt the statue for luck.
