With regards to SMU's "past" are you referring to the cheating "past" that ended 20 years ago or the more recent "past" of being one of the worst performing football teams in the country?

What a joke. Kate, if you read this, you have a job to do. Damn you, do it! ...instead of waiting until The Sporting News and God knows who else is on the to search besides you.
Lighten up, Sparky. A lot of "sources" are SMU folks, who as we all know are making this search the world's best-kept secret. It's human nature to talk a little more freely if you don't know you should be worried about the person listening, right? So if someone knows something and tells someone "trustworthy," that person might then tell a Tom Deinhart, etc. But if that person gets a call that starts with "this is the Dallas Morning News calling..." they might well clam up. Not saying that's what happened, just speculating. My sense is that Kate is all over campus or at least talking to a lot of folks, and that people have been ordered from on high to shut the hell up.
Perhaps. And if so, I rightly owe her an apology. If indeed she has backed off, though, then as diplomatically as I can suggest, please cowgirl the f--k up and get the story first so somebody else somewhere else doesn't have a chance to frame the argument against SMU getting a good coach. Maybe I just expect just a little more from the hometown paper on the hometown team. Not much, but more than we are getting.
And don't call me Sparky, or I'll start calling you Skippy...and it'll just go downhill.

OC Mustang, you are dead on, as I have said before. She is either lazy or incompetent, or both. It is embarrassing that she gets scooped by The Sporting News on story that is her beat. Unfotunately, as best I can tell from emails we have exchanged, she has no competitive spirit or driving desire to move up the DMN food chain by out-hustling her peers.

Not what I implied...stop with argumentative fallacy. I do think she could help SMU out and take the story before another city's media or even somebody like MacMahon pipes up about it. I'd like to see her slap MacMahon around on the blog. That would be entertaining.

On the other end of the extreme, the list of coaches interested in the woebegone SMU job include Terry Bowden, Bob Davie, Dennis Franchione and Bill Callahan. UCLA is somewhere in between. One hopes.
....I assume some guy in Long Beach isn't a reliable source and that this would have been reported somewhere in Nebraska if true, but for the love of gawd!

First of all, the school has been extremely tight lipped in this. I know a couple folks in the athletic dept as i'm sure a bunch of you do, and i can't get anything out of them.
as for Kate and the DMN. why do you care who gets you the information first? She is tracking this story, but the school isn't giving any info. if you have been closely following this, you can almost see how information changes hands from message boards to blogs to online news services to print media. There is so much information available instantly online, and when you're hitting F5 every 3 minutes instead of working, it seems like when a newspaper comes out tomorrow morning that you've known something for longer than you have. AND nowdays sources aren't checked, or noted, so anyone (including me posting on this site) can be a "source".
back off the girl doing her job. The last time SMU Football got this much coverage after a season had ended was about 20 years ago.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
