Rumor from the Sporting News was that he was one of 4 coaches that we are now interested in.

Yeah, I saw that one. Out of the three or so "rumor mill sites" which one has been the most accurate?

Sure, but he could be OUR [deleted]!

-CoS
.................Well say what you want.... but fact is I'd rather be a playing around of golf with Gary Barnett after the season when we have WON a bowl game or a Championship like Barnett has done everywhere, then playing with coach Mr. nice guy and here him say "Just wait until next year." We have been hearing that bs for over 20 years.

Being in Atlanta, I can say that Gailey is not that awe-inspiring...and has lost the recruiting battle to his in-state rival for years...and it has shown up with his win-loss record against Georgia.

Glen Mason...what has that guy every done worth a darn...other than being indecisive about taking the Georgia job, and then a year later moving on to do a whole lot of nothing at Minnesota. The only thing he has going for him is a history of nothing.

Take a risk, Gary Barnett has won championships...took a Big Ten doormat to the Rose Bowl. Orsini can say he did his due diligence and went after his #1 prospect, and now is going to go with 1a, a National Coach of the Year.

Hey now, Barnett is MY [deleted]! He's been my #1 pick. I worry that Biggin's probably right though, and taking someone who's been available all this time might not work for Steve-O, but perhaps he'll make the hire and let the media guys put the best spin they can on it.

NW has PE major, we don't.

Hard to just look at the 'overall' entrance SAT standards and say NW > SMU.

Hell, UT >>>>> SMU, but we all know the majors that their FB players take are way, way <<<< SMU.

I like how GB isn't going down without a fight. He could just try to sweep all of this stuff under the rug, like the university is trying to do, instead he is calling them out for not fighting for the truth to come out.

Man, this guy would be one heck of a catch for the Ponies.

I went through NWern's media guide and I couldn't find a single declared PE major. This issue is way overblown and absolutely not the reason we aren't more competitive in CUSA. Go over and look at TCU...if I remember correctly the last time I looked into this, less than 10% of that team were in EDU or PE majors. Plenty of mid-sized schools have been able to build programs by funneling guys through Communication, Psychology or Sociology majors. I'm all for SMU expanding its majors with Sports Med/Sports Manag./Education because that benefits the school and offers more opportunities to general students...but it isn't as big of a deal and some of you have been making on this board. SMU is chockablock full of humanities and "least resistance" departments already, more would help but it isn't the reason we aren't fielding a competitive team.

westexSMU wrote:If anyone on the search commitee is reading this post and if it is true that you will interview Coach Barnett, remember if you really care about winning at SMU , Coach Barnett would truly be a great hire for SMU. As I said on another post, Coach Barnett has won Championships at everywhere he has been. He has done so in the BIG 10 at NORTHWESTERN of all places. He won several Championships at Colorado. If we are serious about really turning this program around Coach Barnett, like PJ would have, will WIN Championships at SMU ! Coach Barnett says he wants to get back into coaching and is "very interested in SMU " which is more than anyone can say for PJ. Yet Coach Barnett is the same quality of coach.......Coach Barnett is a proven recruiter and kids know they can play for Coach Barnett, and if they are good enough, they can go on to the NFL. Superior proven coach....SMU with the money raised wants to rebuild its football program. Gary Barnett wants a second chance and will prove he can WIN here. What more do we want ? Coach Barnett and SMU are alot better fit than some think. We need a quality coach like Gary Barnett at SMU if Championships are our goal.

I can't believe the "big money donors" that have raised the $2M/y for a coach wouldn't be chomping at the bit to get a guy with this resume. Do you think they are putting any pressure on steering the hire?

EP18, any personal knowledge or is this just from stuff you'd read? BTW, will your professors accept SMU's coaching search as a valid distraction and bump your grades up a little?

I have stated before that my best friend played for Barnett at Northwestern, he considers him to be an excellent coach. He regarded him as a nicer guy and better coach than Randy Walker. So he can't be that big a [deleted]. He asked me why Barnett would take the SMU job, but if he did, he would be a great pick-up for the program....

This is a no-brainer hire considering where we are in the process....

Don't worry about Orsini not making the great hire. As I said on a another post, if the Sporting News is correct in that Coach Barnett will interview here at SMU for our job, then remember Orsini HAD to call him last week to request that he interview, because Coach Barnett said early last week on FSN that SMU had not showed any interest in him......Also, who said Orsini did not want Barnett in the 1st place ? Maybe it was someone else that objected at that time..............Truth is, they appear to have put all their eggs on PJ coming and failed to pull it off. But don't believe Orsini is going to make another mistake to look better. I think Orsini is smart enough to realize that if he hires Gary Barnett, it will not take long when Coach starts recruiting, for people to forget about him not hiring Coach Barnett weeks ago.
