Q, Sasser, Willie D. Sasser basically led SMU to a win over Texas Tech in one of his first games freshman year. I think Elsey came in and started quite a but too. I cant recall on Castro and Simpson, they definitely played as sophomores.

Well, those 3 classes in a row, late 90's-early 00's, really should have done more for the program.

I think it was Sas, Davis, & Elsey followed by Hancock, Floyd, Niemi & Forinash. Then came Q, Jibran Kelley etc. Forget which year Nigel Smith came in. Either way, of those classes, we certainly got a lot of production out Sas/Willie D & Elsey as frosh. The Simpson/Isham/Brian Miller/Castro class contributed, as well. That team was dominated by Q & Hancock, though.

One thing that bothers me, in going over this in my head, is how we had talent under Dement, and nothing to show. A few of those teams, should have made some noise.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Dement never seemed to develop talent. Individual skills never improved and teams never coalesced. All his guys were as good as they ever got by their sophomore years. I always thought Sasser was as good as a freshman as he was a senior

easy. And I know you know this. Those teams didnt have an enforcer defensively, nobody that would get you the rebound when you had to have it and certainly not much offensive threat in the post. Niemi just didn't have the hops. Floyd didnt have the nastiness. Forinash neither one. those teams went as far as perimeter play and below average shooting could take you. Hows that for a combo, a perimeter dominated team that is not good shooting team from outside? As for Dement, he is an interesting thing. He has succeeded everywhere he has been except SMU and is on his way to an encore rebuild at UNCG. Really makes me scratch my head.

by the way, why is Harp ahead of Malone in the rotation now? Makes no sense at all.

Malone does not play with much hustle is my only feeling. He is certainly a bigger threat.

i see why you might say that, but I dont really agree. Malone takes more chances on defense and makes mistakes, but even so overall game is way ahead right now.

Don't get me wrong. I REALLY like him and think he is going to do well for us. Not sure yet on Harp.

Castro, Isham, and Simpson played a great deal as Freshman. You are correct. Simpson started every game I want to say. Castros and Isham both played in the 15-20 minute range per contest.

I think that it has to do with Malone's defense. I have heard Doh say on numerous occasions that Malone, right now, is not a very good on the ball defender.
