Perfect Fit - Slick Rick

Postby PonyPatrol » Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:43 pm

I realize there have been conflicting reports concerning SMU's alleged (dis)interest in Neuheisel, but this guy may really be the best candidate available for this job (including Bowden). Naturally, this makes him a longshot....

Still only 46, charasmatic, big name, innovative offense. Neuheisel would absolutely be the face of SMU. The metroplex, and the rest of college football for that matter, would do a double take if he were to accept the job here.

There is an existing belief that he tore down the programs at UW and CU, but in reality there were a bevy of restrictions and impediments throughout the UW community that never allowed Rick a fair shake. He took both programs to a very high level with the players he inherited, and restrictions aside, he is known as one hell of a recruiter.
Furthermore, he was one of the youngest coaches in D1 football during his stint in the 90's (taking over at CU when he was 33), and has surely polished his methods.

Throw out what he's done at Baltimore this year as the OC, as that offense is devoid of talent - his personality, much like that of Pete Carroll, is tailored to run a college program. In 1995 he took his players white water rafting, tubing and would hold "jam" sessions with his guitar.

Both of these articles point out the culture in UW during his time there, which antagonized Rick and the football program...this could be a guy who has a real chip on his shoulder, with the ability to rise again to the spotlight....EXACTLY what we need.

(I love that UW posted 10 4th quarter come from behind wins in 19 games [going 17-2]....it would sure be nice to finish a game off....)

He's also known to creatively interpreting recruiting rules/restrictions.

Not that I have a problem with that. I think he'd be a great coach.

As long as his interpretation isn't to focus on 5'8 qb's from 3A schools...

I wouldn't mind Rick N. at all. The creative interpretation of recruiting rules/restrictions is probably due to the JD he holds from USC...

I would be thrilled to get Rick as the new coach. He is still a name that people know but anyone know the details of why he left CU?

It would be great to have him as our HC. I wish the SMU administration would agree.

I think we're going to have to get "creative" if we ever want to drag ourselves up from the football gutter. I'm all for it.

I heard that he left CU because CU can't or couldn't at the time give guaranteed long-term contracts.

What do you mean conflicting? The DMN reported last week that he wasn't a candidate.
