The problem is we obviously(for reasons beyond me) dont want some of the big names who are open to the job here at SMU. For example, Mason, Bowden, Bower, Neuheisel, etc. I just don't get it. If Orsini isn't interested in the names I've mentioned the coach he does hire better be a bad MOFO or else it will be very disappointing.

Quality over Expediency

Post by dcfan »

I'm empathetic to recruits being uneasy. Who wouldn't be in their shoes.

I am glad SMU appears to be steadfast in the pursuit of a big-time coach. Trying to get a coach just to meet a deadline would be foolish. SMU football needs a major catalyst to get it where it should be, and getting any ol' coach for purposes of not missing one or two weeks of recruiting would be a poor trade-off. Everyone with a stake in this (SMU as a school, the football program, the fans, the recruits, etc.) would prefer to have the best coach, and have him ASAP. But if there has to be a trade made between quality and expediency, we've got to favor quality.

Best part of that story: Andrew Ellison is identified as a LINEBACKER.

Finally — a linebacker with some size AND speed.

We know Barnett and Neuheisel are or were interested in the SMU job. They said so. Yet the word on the street was SMU is not interested in them ??? ...Barnett said last week on FSN that SMU had not shown interest in him.

I saw that too. He totally backed off his statement of interest in the job too. I thought that was really interesting.

famousguy, who ever said that Mason, Bowden, or Bower were interested? I haven't seen that reported anywhere. Only Barnett and Neuheisel. "Willing to listen" and "interested" are very different. (Granted they all have marketing people posting BS on this board, but I haven't heard any of those three profess their interest publicly.)

I get the sense that Bowden and Barnett have no more interest in coaching at SMU than Johnson did (and for the record, I didn't get the sense Johnson ever had the slightest interest). Instead, they're trying to conjure up interest in them by SMU to make them relevant again in coaching conversations at OTHER schools. To hell with them — my money's on Steve-O at the moment.

Interesting to hear Scott Smith's son is coming. Scott was RB coach when I was here. Great guy, highly motivated. If his son works as hard as his dad he'll be a great asset. I think Scott played at Baylor and coached there after he left us. Anybody know what his son plays?

I suppose that Orsini could have his guy, but has agreed to keep it quiet until that coach's season (college or NFL) is over, thus the comment about less urgency during the dead period.
