Turner GILL?????Did I miss something and he signed somewhere else? Or is he totally out of the question since he has no experience coaching at a BCS school? He's been my top pick all along and still looks available, plus he's local, has the skins as a player and now a coach, and wouldn't drain the budget since he's only making $180K a year now!

I disagree. He took a program that traditionally was the worst in all of D-I and made it relevant - didn't Buffalo compete for its conference title this year? He also is known as a coach of impeccable character and widely regarded as an exceptional recruiter. He's thought to be a future coaching star, from what I've read.
"What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"
- Randy Galloway ESPN Radio (103.3 FM)
He was one of two finalists, against another coach who is very highly respected and coached defense at Nebraska when the Cornhuskers had one of their fiercest defensive units - hardly a "last choice."
If Nebraska only hires its own, where did Bill Callahan come from? "What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"

everyone has an oops. nebraska was only looking to hire their own, and turner gill was option 2. cmon. really. eggs in the basket of turner gill. boooo
"In a worldly standpoint, people look at this as the worst job ever. But I didn't look at it that way. I had a purpose here. I'd been blessed to be at Nebraska, where they'd already established a program, but I was excited to have an opportunity to build one."
Uh, some people would say he could use the same quite if hired by SMU. I actually didn't know they didn't beat a winning team, but 5-7 is a lot better than 1-10. "Coach has brought a mental toughness into my game," Willy said. "Guys look to me in the huddle. He's definitely helped me with having that voice so they know you're their leader." AND, he could make an easy transition from coaching Willy to coaching Willis! And Buffalo finished ranked 98th, compared to SMU's 115.
well let me tell you...I WOULD BE THRILLED to hire a coach to bring SMU Football from 115th to 98th! I Can't wait. I'm officially on the Turner Gill Bandwagon!
I will again state what I have stated many times:
Turner Gill is not interested. (See the articles in previous Gill threads--to lazy to pull them up again.) He would be a good coach here. Not the best available, but definitely a solid hire. Doesn't matter. He isn't coming. All indications are that he declined to even interview. Pending that he has a couple of winning seasons the next two years, he will go much bigger than SMU. This is too risky of a situation for him when he has already established a recruiting base for Buffalo and has the beginnings of a monumental turnaround already underway. Why in the world would he want to start over? That would put his coaching career behind at least 2 more years from where he is right now. Yes, the $ would be better here, but if he is unable to turn us around as everyone else has been unable to, he is hosed. You can take over one failing program, be unsuccessful, and say "conditions were difficult there." You can't take over one, have some moderate success, job hop to another one without finishing the job, not succeed, and still get a great coaching gig with that as your resume. Gill is in an ideal situation right now for his future. Not for the $. He wants to be a head football coach at a major program someday, and the SMU gig would be big $, but high risk. Staying at Buffalo is not only the safer bet, but the faster track for his career.
You say that, yet people on here are still touting Todd Dodge? He hasn't shown anything at UNT yest.
Gill is an up and comer, in 2 years he took a horrible program in Buffalo (yes, there has been one worse than SMU), and made them respectable. I'd rather have Gill than some retread fired from another school.
Good points Huskerpony, but I still think he may reconsider if the money was right. He's running a risk at Buffalo as well, if they have a bad season next year he'll definantly not be considered for any lucrative coaching positions.
