If Shula is our guy since the rumor has been going around what kind of staff will he bring over. Will Joe Kines stay with him. His dc at bama. Kines was one of the better dc's in the sec for many years.

How about Todd Monken for OC, the Jaugars Wide Receivers coach...was LSU's wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator from '05-'06...JaMarcus Russell was pretty good as I recall...

And while we're at it, let's grab our old friend Dave Campo as DC - currently the jaguars secondary coach...

Monken is also known as a terrific recruiter, and coached Rashaun Woods at Okie St. when he had 7 TD's against the ponies! He's already had more success in Ford than Bennett had last year...

He coached two first round WR's at LSU last year (Bowe and Davis).

Hell, why don't we consider this guy for head coach??

Ooof, you would bring up the Rashaun Woods 7 TD performance. You know the game is not going in your favor when the opponent's wideout pushes down your DB for one of his 7 TDs, and the refs throw a flag for pass interference......on YOUR DB! That had to be one of the most painful games to watch, even worse than Tomlinson's last game at the Hilltop back in Nov 2000.

Doubt it. Kines has been given a cush job in UA Athletics and he just goes around making speeches, etc. He's a great guy, and great football coach - we'd be fortunate to have him and if he would agree to come I could deal with Shula.

Is it asking too much to hire a guy that wasn't fired from his previous job for not winning??? Shula? Really? Is it that bad?

Monken also interviewed for the La Tech job before moving to Jacksonville a couple of years ago. Nice guy. He lived in my neighborhood and I also know them through the Pelinis. They are good friends.

Not winning enough...I think you should check out his recruiting classes.

Last I checked, Saban didn't do much better than he did.

what he did at Alabama, good or bad, is of little relevance to us. Couldn't be bigger differences in terms of support, attractiveness to recruits, expectations and pressure to win. IF you want to pro and con Shula, got to focus on the intangibles and how he fits here. Alabama gave him great experience in coaching and life, but his record there gives us little to go on. Can he build us into a bowl team, conference champ, and solid program from scratch or not? Does he have the personality, energy, contacts, football smarts etc? Those are the questions.

sure, i get that but... he's gone for a reason right? how about we hire someone that is up and coming vs. SEC damaged goods.

Yeah, just because he couldn't succeed at Alabama with unlimited resources and unparallelled fan support doesn't mean he can't be great at SMU.

The recruiting classes weren't bad. He was hampered somewhat by scholarship limitations, but more than that, by his terrible in game coaching. In Shula's 4 years at Alabama he never won a game where he had to come from behind in the 4th quarter - despite losing a ton of close games. He's going to run the most vanilla, prostyle, conservative offense you have ever seen and if you don't believe that then you didn't watch any of his games at Alabama. I had the bad fortune of being in grad school at Alabama during the Shula years and it was terrible.
