Well put, but i think either coach would've loved to bolt their current coaching gigs. At least none of the Dolphins QB's got sentenced to 23 months yesterday.

They were screwed the day Vick started being quesioned about the dogfighting incidents. This was just a bad situation for Petrino and he deserves better. The Falcons should pay him for the remaining of the year and hold no grudges for what he is doing. Vick was an idiot for doing what he did.

He told his assistants they are going with him. Is there anybody we could go after?

How the hell did he get an NFL job if he is that bad? Any coach in the NFL is good enough for SMU.

He was a defensive coordinator at UGA for a few years, left to take the linebackers job at Jacksonville. He was there for a year, left to come to Georgia Southern, and then took a team that was 8-4 and with essentially the same players, proceeded to go 3-8. He bolted after the year for the Falcons.

His only previous head coaching experience was at D-II Wayne State where he was 15-16, so his overall head coaching record is 18-24. He may well be a fine assistant coach, but as the head man . . . I would say he's awful, but that's insulting to all the awful head coaches. He's not that good.

I promise you, you don't want him!

Lots of NFL coaches aren't good college coaches. (Bill Callahan)

Being a head coach is totally different than being a position coach and different than being a coordinator. Lots of different responsibilities, requires you to motivate the players differently, etc.

Coaching in college is totally different than coaching in the NFL because you have to develop talent and motivate teenagers, rather than just put already talented adults into a system, who are supposed to be professionals being paid to do a job.

Only a handful of head coaches have been successful in both college and the NFL, and there is a litany of former NFL assistants who have not succeeded after moving down to college ball.

While there may be an NFL coach who is a good fit for SMU, not just any random NFL coach will do.

You forgot the most important difference-easily-in the NFL each team theoretically gets the same number of draft choices and there is a system that evens the playing field-the NFL draft which awards the Top Picks to the worst teams. In College a Coach can sign as many No. 1 Draft choices that he can convince to go to his school. Coach is more important in the NFL because the talent is evenly dispersed. Some schools in College literrally get the equivalent of 10 First Round Draft Choices while others get the equivalent of 25 Eighth Round Draft choices like SMU.

We do deserve better, but we can't get any better obviously. There is no science to backup the, he can't coach college football or the college coach can't coach pro. It is pure coincedence when it happens.

It's got nothing to do with being in the NFL or college. VanGorder's spent time in both. He's just not a good head coach as evidenced by his 18-24 record as a head coach.

He was quoted somewhere as saying "If I can't win at Georgia Southern, then I'm not a very good coach." Well, he didn't win at Georgia Southern.
