I don't take notes at games so I'll just give a few points off the top of my head:
See below for a discussion of the 2 point conversion.
Bennett put himself in a deep hole when he demoted Bartel. Phillips is not ready. Wallis never will be. It's really that simple. Phillips can run. I don't know if he can pass. I remember one that should have been intercepted--a short out pattern. He did throw a nice deep ball to Warren on the right sideline, but it was a little long. I don't remember any other passes. Wallis is Wallis. He had 2 fumbles. Under normal conditions he wouldn't have come back in after the 2nd. The coaches obviously have no confidence in Phillips so Wallis stayed in. Philips red-shirt year has been wasted. Three games are left. We will probably see the same substitution pattern in the last 3 games.
I thought the D played pretty well--maybe their best game since Baylor. They did seem to wear down in the 4th quarter but who can blame them. They were on the field a lot.
The Fresno QB is nothing to write home about. David Carr he is not. The whole Fresno team is unimpressive. They did step it up a notch in the 2nd half which is what decent teams do.
We finally ran an end around in the first quarter. Guess what? It worked for about 15-20 yards. Nice run by Comet who also had another very nice run after a short pass in the 4th quarter.
SMU got off to a 2 point lead after a safety and then by 5 after a short FG.
KK fumbled on the 3. We could have had a 9-0 lead. I don't think we have been up by 9 the entire season.
It was a competitive game. Not a blowout by any means. The D gave me reason for some hope today. The O is a long way from being settled. If Phillips is the QB of the future then the O needs to be structured to his strenghts which are not inconsiderable. He is big, strong, elusive and fast. He can probably pass but I have no numbers to prove it. We probably need to become an option team. Not that stupid wishbone option but an I option like in the good old days with Dickerson, James and Lance.

The secondary played very well today. I guess it helps when you are not facing Dinwiddie, Symons or Fields. Berrian wasnt much of a factor on offense, although he killed us on punt returns. I agree it appears Phillips redshirt is being wasted, but then again it doesn't make too much sense to me to redshirt both Meeks and Phillips given we need qb help now. I think Phillips is the qb of the future. That throw to Warren one hell of a spriral. But I admit not having seen much of Meeks at all. Heres a conspiracy theory, maybe Meeks is the future man and they didnt want to waste his redshirt. As for running the option, I have to remind you Nach that I threw that out after the Baylor game and you called me an idiot. I don't want to go option, I like the pass, but our best plays today came when Phillips ran option or qb draw. Phillips is clearly struggling getting up to speed on the plays etc, but let him learn on the job. What can it hurt at this point? He won't melt.

Ah yes, the Oliver Stone in all of us. Somehow I doubt that this staff is that clever. Sorry if I called you an idiot. I really don't remember it. It was probably because I was convinced that Bartel was the future of this team. I was strongly in his corner. He clearly was not an option QB. Maybe now people are realizing what a good passer he is. My conspiracy theory is that if Phillips doesn't improve in a hurry, and maybe even if he does, we are going to see a juco QB in here PDQ.

I had alot of faith in Bartel too, I just thought is was clear that our offensive line could not support a pure drop back passer no matter how good his arm. I was saying at the time that you could not blame Bartel for that. As for the Juco qb idea, I find that problematic. Are we giving up on Phillips until his senior year? I think that would be a mistake in itself. What a mess. No need to apologize for the idiot thing, I wasn't bothered by it. I have my idiotic moments, its hard not to be dazed and confused as an SMU fan.

What is it with people wanting to try and make a Tight End into a D-I starting quarterback?

WINNING GAMES! I can ask the same question just turned around. why try and make a TE out of a player who has never played anything other than QB and is a proven champion with out game testing him first. This guy got all of his skins working in a system where his coach wasn't his dad. Nothing wrong with dads coaching sons but there should be somthing notable about players who win with out that extra protection. :smart: Just check out the roster & bios
