Lost Redshirts

Postby Mickey » Sun Nov 02, 2003 7:53 am

Why did Bennett take the RS off Phillips and Sturdivant if he is not going to play them? Wallis is seeing more time at QB than Phillips and Sturdivant did not even play. Jamey Harper came out briefly yesterday because of an injury and Moodley goes in at FS as a replacement. Sturdivant lost his redshirt year for nothing.

Looks a little disorganized doesn't it? We will now have good players for 3 years instead of 4. The DMN this morning indicated that Bennett will choose betweeen Phillips and Wallis for La Tech. If he selects Wallis then Phillips red-shirt was wasted for what amounts to one half of play this season.

Dear,Dear Nacho, have you lost the view that the present and future recruits will be bringing to SMU; Strength, Talent, Heart, Knowledge, and Team Momentum. This is a tough year but even harder for Coach Bennett, and the players who want to win. WE fans can help build a foundation for a winning team, by standing by our Coaching Staff and team; encouraging them. I see next year as being more focused and committed to win. More Team Effort. and...Look Out in 3 to 4 years we will be War Horses!!!!not Ponies.

MustangMawmaw...the strength, heart, etc stuff is great and all, but in college football you have to think of the legistics sometimes. Chris Phillips has lost a whole year of playing time because Bennett thought it would be a great idea to play with his head and put him here and there. If you are going to play a freshmen and rip his redshirt off of him, give him experience and leave him in their for a while...I don't imagine Phillips has gained anything from losing his redshirt...the only thing that has happened is that he has lost a whole year of eligibility...

For what it's worth, Coach Bennett did say yesterday after the game that regardless of who starts at QB for the rest of the year, he will continue to play Phillips, because you can learn more playing than practicing and watching. Who gets the first snap hasn't been chosen, but I imagine we'll continue to see some kind of rotation.

Thats just stupid, though. It makes no sense and it shows you how terrible of a decission this has been on Bennets part. I mean, I don't care if he throws 3 straight interceptions, he needs to stay out there and needs to get used to playing in front of thousands of people and against Div 1-A competition. Phillips could have gotten stronger and faster and could have come back next year as a Redshirt Freshmen and could have had four years ahead of him. Now, after this year, he will have three and has wasted a year of eligibility.

Are you kiddin me, Cox? Bennett realized that he wasnt going to have a QB with experience (thats worth a damn) next year and so he pretty much had to rip Phillips' redshirt off because for god's sake, we need someone with experience next year right off the bat. Would you guys honestly rather have to start this process all over again and start a redshirt freshman QB with no real game experience? THINK.

Bennett has no options here. Give the man some credit.

Bennett made the decision a little late. The leadership/disciplinary/execution problems necessitated it. He admitted he wished he had done it before. Be thankful we still have a good freshman QB with redshirt intact. It IS a shame. And if we get a juco in here, as PB indicated we might, both Phillips and Meeks could very well be riding pine next year anyway. Forgive my ignorance, but what's the rule on non-medical sophomore redshirts?

Florida, you're right, he had no choice and it was the right choice. But at this point he has to play Phillips more than Wallis, not less like yesterday.

anybody can redshirt any year as long as he graduates within 5 years of his entering class. As for worrying about Meeks and Phillips not playing until they are seniors-I say who cares?-if they ain't good enough to beat out the JUCO starter then SMU will have a better team right. TCU is 5 deep at TB and is relying on the backup QB and without the quality of the replacements they wouldn't be undefeated. They aren't quite Dickerson, James and Dupard but they ain't that far off. Its been so long since we had depth around here that we are worried about highly recruited players not getting to play? That's when you know your good!!!! Bennett's job is to recruit the 4 best players he can at each position.

Everyone saying that Bennett HAD to do it is dead wrong. He could have played rotating QB's with Ashton Nixon and Wallis if that was his plan. My point is, it has done Phillips no good to go in, then go out, go in, then go out. If he was going to take his red shirt off, at least justify it by playing the kid more than half the game. Tate Wallis isn't the future of this team, Chris Phillips and Meeks are. My main point is, this little game of QB by committe is no good and isn't going to do us any better than if he had done it with Nixon instead. This would have given Meeks a WHOLE YEAR more of eligibility....

As far as Sturdivant goes, my understanding was, he was only playing because everybody back there got hurt, and there weren't many other options.

I can guarantee you, Bennett does not like doing this, with the redshirts. It makes no sense to rip him for not winning, and then again for benching veterans to play "his guys," and then rip him again for putting the veterans back in, when some of "his guys" might not be ready, or the veterans get healthy, or whatever.

Cox, its really as simple as who do you think might be your starting qb in the 2004 opener. It can't be guy thats never taken a college snap unless you want prolonged problems. My only qualm is that Phillips needs to play more now that it had to happen.
